Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Cecile enjoys volunteering at the Holy Trinity Orphanage in New Orleans. What could be more meaningful than helping children who have lost their parents? Cecile shares a special bond with Marie-Grace, whose mother died a few years ago. Cecile also feels a strong connection with Perrine, a little girl whose parents recently died. With yellow fever raging through New Orleans, the girls are accustomed to seeing caskets and funerals. Cecile decides to participate in a special benefit for the orphans of New Orleans and begins rehearsing the poem she will read. But can Cecile perform on a public stage? With Marie-Grace's support, Cecile rehearses the poem. Throughout the city, people donate their time and talent to the benefit. Cecile is thrilled to share her poem with the crowd and to bring joy to her mother's eyes. At the end of the book, readers will find a historical section detailing New Orleans' recovery from the disaster of 1853. In this unique series, readers can experience the events from the joint perspectives of two best friends. This unusual storytelling feature allows readers to step back in time through two identities, gaining a wider understanding of historical events. Part of the "American Girl" series. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.
