Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1 Up-- A book that is not easy to place. Although the beginning letter of each emotion-- Angry, Bored, Curious is colored in contrast to the rest of the word in black and the type is a clean san serif , it is not an alphabet book for young children. Emotions are not concrete enough for the prosaic task of learning letters. On the other hand, the purpose does not seem to be a bibliotherapeutic catalog of feelings. Xenophobic is certainly obscure for that purpose. This book operates on a more subconscious level. Its illustrations, done with the bold, matte-finish acrylics, flat shapes, decorative arrows, and swirls representative of contemporary Southwestern art, have a dreamlike quality. The use of animal figures and especially the recurrence of coyote reinforce both the regional and visionary feeling. Artistically, it is an exceptional work--colorful, original, unique. Although some words will need discussion, the power of many pictures-- Angry, for example, with its snarling, red-faced beast--will speak eloquently to children. The imaginative and whimsical detail will fascinate them, but this is not a title with wide appeal. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
