Children's Literature
The life of Chvez, an American hero of the non-violent protesters of the United Farm Workers, is described and his life traced in simple, straightforward English and Spanish. In his youth in Arizona as an American of Mexican descent, he experienced prejudice. During the Depression, his family faced poverty and discrimination as migrant farm workers. Chvez never forgot his origins. In 1962 he began his attempts to organize farm workers to better their lives. He was successful in attaining his goals without violence. His story is truly inspirational. Accardo's full-page, naturalistic paintings depict events and provide portraits, but lack the passion suggested in the text. They are more like colored photographs using muted colors to tell their story. There is a handy timeline on the back end-papers. 2002, Piata Books/Arte Pblico Press, Ages 5 to 9.
