School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Two men from very different backgrounds are profiled in these biographies. Chavez grew up as a poor migrant farm worker and later devoted his life to improving farm workers' rights, eventually becoming president of the powerful United Farm Workers labor union. Fox rose from a comfortable childhood to become a corporate executive and then president of the Coca-Cola company in Mexico, and is now the president of Mexico. Though Chavez has been covered in several good biographies, there is little information available for young readers on Fox, which makes this book a worthwhile addition to beginning biography collections. The writing is clear and readable in a large, easy-to-read font; difficult words are in bold text, referring back to a glossary. Both books are illustrated with numerous photographs; unfortunately, the pages appear overcrowded due to overly small margins. A detailed time line, index, and bibliography complete each book, and readers are directed to the publisher's Web page for further online resources.-Sue Morgan, Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Union City, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
