Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
In the fourth book of the "Caped 6th Grader" series, Zoe feigns disappointment when she doesn't get into soccer camp with her best friend, Emily, but in fact she's thrilled. Zoe is a secret superhero and her grandfather is sending her to "Camp Courageous," a camp exclusively for kids like her. Finally she doesn't have to hide her super powers from anyone. Supersonic speedster, Zoe, is teamed up in the Intrepid Cabin with flying Megan, Casey, who can hear a mouse sneeze from twelve miles away, and Melanie, who shoots laser beams with her eyes. They join the boys of the Bravery Cabin—Zander, another super speedster, stretchy Dave, Sam, who has super strength to spare, and Howie, whose superpower has not yet emerged, but whose clear thinking and analytical mind are top notch. The eight quickly become good friends as they form a team to compete for the camp trophy. And just as quickly things go awry, egos get in the way, and the team falls apart. It takes cool, clear thinking non-superhero, Howie, to help the others see that the best super power of all is the ability to pull together as a team in the face of what seem like insurmountable odds. This engaging story, although marketed to nine to twelve year olds, is written at a solid third grade reading level and will primarily appeal to second through fourth graders.
