School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-7-- Two choppy presentations. Each begins with a diagram showing classifications of the plant world and a global map indicating the zones in which the subject groups can be found. One or two full-color photos and many small full-color drawings are featured on each double-page spread. Treatment includes various examples within the group, their importance, reproduction, and conservation. Both titles are crammed with facts, but they are repetitious, have vague captions, and include pictures of dozens of individual plants that do not follow the text closely. Words explained only in the glossary are printed in boldface; one page of Cacti has 14 such words in 4 paragraphs. Constant see-references further interrupt the narrative flow. One big blooper in Cacti : Mexico is in North--not Central--America. The scale of the plants drawn is not shown; they all appear to be the same size. The photos are adequate, but in most cases just too small. These books do not offer in-depth, well-integrated information. --Sharon Levin, University of Vermont, Burlington
