Overview

Caddie Woodlawn, which has been captivating young readers since 1935, was awarded the John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Now it is in a brand-new edition with lively illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman. In her new foreword, Carol Ryrie Brink lovingly recalls the real Caddie, who was her grandmother, and tells how she often "sat spellbound, listening, listening!" as Caddie told stories of her pioneer childhood. Children everywhere will love redheaded Caddie with her penchant for pranks. Scarcely out of one scrape before she is into another, she refuses to be a "lady," preferring instead to run the woods with her brothers. Whether she is crossing the lake on a raft, visiting an Indian camp, or listening to the tales of the circuit rider, Caddie's adventures provide an exciting and authentic picture of life on the Wisconsin frontier in the 1860s. And readers will discover, as Caddie learns what growing up truly means, that it is not so very different today.

Chronicles the adventures of eleven-year-old Caddie growing up with her six brothers and sisters on the Wisconsin frontier in the mid-nineteenth century.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Although this Newbery Award winning novel was published in 1935, it's protagonist, brave and lively 11 year old Caddie, and her many exciting, humorous and sometimes dangerous adventures might still have appeal to young readers of both sexes. The book is based on true stories of the author's grandmother, who lived on the Wisconsin frontier in the 1860s. Caddie tries to reject her mother's attempts to turn her into a young lady, preferring to join and sometimes even instigate the deeds and pranks of her brothers. She stands up to a school bully, and gets revenge on a snobbish, visiting cousin. Unfortunately, this otherwise fine novel tries to portray Native Americans in a manner that would seem sympathetic for the times, but by today's standards would still be considered condescending and rather stereotyped.

    Great Heroine, Great Story

This book was required reading for me in elementary school in Chicago in the 80's. I loved it then and when my third grade daughter brought home a historical novel assignment, I immediately thought of Caddie Woodlawn. My daughter is a tomboy and I knew she would relate to Caddie. Because I wanted to read it again myself and because I expected there would be some vocabulary and points that required some explanation or discussion, I chose to read it aloud to her. We are both enjoying this book thoroughly and highly recommemd it.

    more from this reviewer

    After 50 years . . .

It is time for me to reread this one. I am 60 years old and remember reading this book when I was a young girl - and I rarely read books by choice in those days! I remember the adventurous Caddie, along with her brothers and the Indians, and I thought Caddie's father was the most wonderful man in the world. When my daughters were young, I insisted that they read it also, but I think it made less of an impact on them than it did on me. A great book and a great look look at American frontier life in the 1800s.

    Enjoyable Book

Though this book wasn't my favorite of all times, I found it very enjoyable to read. It was magnificently written, and held useful information about the sort of life Caddie held. The way Brink described things was nice, though she didn't use large words. Of course, I could relate to Caddie in many different ways, considering that she is a tomboy, and loves to hang out with her brothers. But the fact that she was different most of all made her the lovable character and person that she is. I would recommend this to anyone who loves to snuggle up with a good book in a soft and comfortable chair, ready to read without end all night.

Chicken Soup for the Tomboy's Soul

Carol Ryrie Brink¿s Newberry Award winning novel Caddie Woodlawn is a charming story of an unusual girl and her life in the Wisconsin frontier. Based on the stories of her grandmother (Caddie Woodhouse), Brink tells the story of a young tomboy who is a bit of a thorn in her mother¿s side, the apple of her father¿s eye, and the bridge connecting her older and younger brother, making an inseparable triumvirate of adventurers. Caddie is unconventional in her abhorrence for ¿feminine¿ ways, and makes her dainty cousin¿s life misery with her tomboyish antics, yet her kind-hearted nature shines through as she befriends the Native Americans and helps those in need. This is a great story for both boys and girls, and it¿s `Chicken Soup for the Tomboy¿s Soul¿!

    One of the best!

This is one of my favorite classic stories! I looooooooove Caddie Woodlawn!!!!!!!! This is even better than the movie they have out there. It's about a young girl growing up in the 1800's, and she is as tomboy as tomboy can get! She loves adventure and gets herself into all of these messes... it's really crazy! Caddie Woodlawn was actually a real person, which I thought was really interesting. I wonder how much of it actually happened and how much of it the author changed for the purpose of her story. I liked the part of the story when Caddie's snobby and stuck-up cousin Anabelle came to visit. I also liked Katie Hyman, and I'm mad that the movie gave her a much smaller part. She even died in the movie, and that doesn't even happen in the book. If you have watched the movie but not the book, I recommend reading the actual book... it's a lot of fun!

    Caddie: The Girl of Rebellion

'In 1864, Caddie Woodlawn was 11, and as wild a tomboy that ever ran the woods of western Wisconsin.' Thus begins the book of Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. A non-fiction book of rebellion, celebration, and indian massacre. Her mother is pushing her to dress and act like a young lady but Caddie fiercly pushes back. There's no way she's going to let herself do that. There are just way too many buttons on those dresses! But when cousin Annabelle comes to stay with Caddie and her family, Caddie and her brothers are the worst yet. I felt so sorry for poor Annabelle when they played pranks on her. Even though it was funny, I hated the way they put that egg down the back of her shirt when she did a somersault, and that is only the beginning. As I read this book I felt as if I was running with Caddie and her brothers in the woods. I could feel the cool river they crossed to get to the indians. Every time I read this book I felt as if it was sucking me in. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves adventure and rebellion.

    liked it very much

My mom bought this for me for my b-day and i thought i would hate it, but it ended up being a favorite book of mine. Caddie is a brave girl who likes growing up on the frontier. She seems like a person you could really be good friends with.

    A Girl Between Two Worlds

Caddie Woodlawn was allowed to play and act like her brothers for a few years. Now her mother wants her to become more lady like. She continues to go on adventures with her brothers and learns lessons along the way. It is up to her to decide what she must do and be happy at the same time. This was a wonderful story and I would highly recommend it.

Caddie Woodlaw is an excellent book!

Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink is a very good book. This fiction/literature book is one of the best I have ever read. This story is about an eleven-year-old girl who instead of becoming a ¿lady¿ would rather run around the woods with her brothers. Although this book is a fiction book, it also has some true events that families would have gone through during this time in 1864. Caddie and her family face a difficult decision at the end that could change their life forever. This book was so good I couldn¿t put it down because of all the fun adventures Caddie got herself into. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an adventure, or just enjoy a great book. Other great books on this topic are Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan and Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O¿Dell. Other books by Carol Brink are Baby Island, Buffalo Coat, and Caddie Woodlawn¿s Family, the sequel to Caddie Woodlawn.

A terrific book about working together

The book Caddie Woodland makes you wonder what is going to happen next and if any one is going to get hurt. It leaves you with a suspenseful feeling after you put the book down. It also shows you how a regular family lives and copes with problems. The three main characters in this book are Caddie, Tom, and Warren. They are brothers and sister who always hang out together and get each other into and out of trouble. This author shows you how girls can do things just like boys and that boys and girls make a good team. It shows you points of view with different people during different times. This book is also about how friendship always prevails over evil. Like when the Indians turn out to be on the white men¿s side but by the time the townspeople figure it out it¿s to late and they people who could have been everyone¿s best friend. This is a good book because it has family crises, some funny times with the family and some breathtaking moments.
