Overview

The candlelit cover art may whisper quiet storm, but the down-tempo grooves lurking within are more likely to appeal to the electronica set, particularly those enamored by such hip musical purveyors as Eighteen Street Lounge, Guidance Recordings, and Ninja Tune. Taking its title from the Hollywood nightspot of the same name, the 14-track assemblage was compiled and mixed by DJ Mick Cole. The acts included encompass such genres as lounge, acid jazz, and drum'n'bass, and are drawn from all across the globe: the U.K. (D*Note, Fila Brazillia), Finland (Nuspirit Helsinki), the Netherlands (ZUCO 103), Brazil (the late Suba), and even the U.S.-by-way-of-Italy (Zeb). Fans of the Orb, Thievery Corporation, and Bebel Gilberto -- with whom many of these artists, remixers, and producers have worked -- should find much to like about these laid-back, chilled-out waves of rhythmic sound.
