Overview

Metro's world music compilations tend to vary widely in quality. Some of them feature few or no original versions of the songs they collect, substituting cookie-cutter re-recordings that only give a feeling of what the music is like, instead of presenting the authentic music of the place the album supposedly celebrates. Cafe' Argentina is one of the label's better collections, featuring original versions of songs by Astor Piazzolla, Orquesta Tipica, and Roberto Goyeneche. Not surprisingly, these acts provide some of the album's highlights, including Piazzolla's "Tanguedia III [BandOnéon Solo]," Orquesta Tipica's "Recuerdo," and Goyeneche's "Vuelvo Al Sur [BandOnéon Solo]." Though the collection mostly focuses on older recordings by these artists, some more contemporary pieces, such as Marconi's "Para el Recorrido" and Carlos Garcia and L'Orchestre De Tango De Buenos Aires' "Al Maestro Con Nostalgia." However, the main difference between the old and new performances is only a slight variation in sound quality, so the album flows from one track to another relatively smoothly. Overall, Cafe' Argentina is a thoroughly enjoyable collection, and one of Metro's better offerings.
