    Probably Not His Last Stand

    Given the popularity of Cain I don't really believe this is the last novel about him and thats a good thing! This is my favorite series in the Warhammer 40K universe.

    While another fine entry to the series this is not the best. The novel seems to be more a series of short stories tied together with a central theme. The build up concerning the central villian was weak and the clash between he and Cain short and not so dramatic.

    Cain seems less of his old persona and more of a stern but friendly taskmaster. Which given that he is teaching in retirement when the book starts may be the point. But I liked more the Cain that crash landed on Perlia and had to liberate the planet in Death or Glory.

    I also was bothered by the plot device that used the appearance of another race at the very end to tie up the loose ends and set the stage for future books in this series or another series in Warhammer 40K.
    This seems to be a black library formula and is overused seeing how the race in question seems to do this same job in other warhammer 40k books.

    But all the staples of a good Cain novel are there. Amberley Vail, Jurgen, interesting characters, unique surprises and backstory with footnotes.

    So enjoy the book and Cains adventures. The Emperor protects and I'll have a bowl of Tanna please!
