Four best friends, one lucky bracelet, and an utterly charming new middle-grade series!

Caitlin would stay at summer camp forever if she could. Her new best friends in the world, Hannah, Mia, and Libby are there. And at home? Everything's different: Her dad is worried he might be losing his job; her mom is repainting the whole house and making the kids volunteer at a soup kitchen; and Caitlin is starting sixth grade at a new school, where none of the girls are as fun or friendly as her Cabin 7 BFFs. But Caitlin has a good-luck charm -- or a good-luck charm bracelet anyway. The Cabin 7 girls bought it together, and Caitlin is taking the first turn wearing it. She's sure it will help turn her luck around . . . but when?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
In a variant on the “traveling pants” motif, four best friends from Cabin 7 at Camp Brookridge purchase a lucky charm bracelet to wear in turn as they return home to their separate lives apart. In this first title in the series, Caitlin, “the outgoing and friendly African-American girl from Connecticut,” is glad to have whatever luck the bracelet can bring as she faces sixth grade in her new magnet school for the arts as well as financial worries at home. The bracelet seems to fail her, however, as she unsuccessfully courts a clique of popular girls and pursues a doomed attempt to run for class president. Only a letter from one of her camp friends, Mia (“a strong and athletic Latina girl from Southern California”), reminds her of her own earlier expressed wisdom that true friends “accept you just the way you are.” The identifying descriptions of the four friends are heavy-handed, and it’s hard to believe that the same girl who won the camp award for Friendliest Camper could now be so clueless about how to make friends in her new school. (It’s also strained to have the four friends decide to communicate only by snail-mail letters.) But Schroeder gives a nice touch in having Caitlin find one of her new friends in line at the soup kitchen where her mother makes her volunteer, and the story works well to communicate and celebrate the value and importance of friendship. Book one in the “Charmed Life” series. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.; Ages 8 to 12.
