Overview

One of the most innovative architect-engineers working today, Santiago Calatrava has designed some fifty bridges in the last fifteen years, each one extraordinary, expressive, and unmistakably from his hand. This monograph offers a complete survey of Calatrava's bridge designs, which occupy a prominent position in his architectural output as a whole. It represents a reassessment of the traditional approach to bridge construction, and establishes his importance as a bridge designer. Essays by Kenneth Frampton and Anthony C. Webster examine Calatrava's work in depth, his use of materials and technology, his position in the history of bridge building, and his ability to make a bridge contribute, both on local and on grander scales, to the life of its surroundings. Many of the more than 600 illustrations - drawings, plans, architectural models and photographs of the realized works - have not been published before. This book, edited by Anthony Tischhauser, provides a unique and exhaustive portrayal of all built and proposed Calatrava bridges.
