Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
03/15/2014
Alexander Calder (1898–1976) is world renowned for his distinctive metal sculptures, both static and kinetic. He invented mobiles: balanced pieces that shift randomly in air currents. This large-format book is a catalog of 50 sculptures and maquettes now appearing in an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), curated by Barron (Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective) and designed by architect Frank O. Gehry. Five illustrated essays deal with various aspects of Calder's work. Barron supplies biographical information and an overview of his works. Other contributors discuss Calder's blending of art and science, the 1964 commissioning of his "Three Quintains" for LACMA's fountains, his connection with modernist Brazil, and the impact of some of his public artworks on cities. The catalog also includes a checklist of the show and a selected exhibition history. VERDICT This ambitious sampling covers nearly all of the sculptor's career. Once considered naïve, now Calder's arching plate fabrications and waving wire contraptions beguile us with their distilled humanity.—David R. Conn, formerly with Surrey Libs., BC
