About the Author

Helen L Merrell — I am a published author of poetry, music, children’s story books and family genealogy. As the author of Caleb and Sami celebrate the 4th of July I owe a big thank you to my friend Kathy Preuss for her knowledge and computer support that brought my thoughts and stories alive to be published. I grew up in a big family in which education was an important part of our upbringing. I raised my children with the same values, reading them many books over the years. As I watched my children grow I felt I wanted to write stories from the memories that were made from my childhood as well. Holidays were always a time for a family celebration. I hope you enjoy this story and will watch for more stories of Caleb and Sami that will be coming out later this year.

Kathy Preuss — Hi, my name is Kathy Preuss. I’ve been working on books with Helen L Merrell for about three years. She is a joy to work with. My father was a school teacher for 37 years. He and I read to my children books like Helen and I write. I am currently working on my own book, Bakers Dozen coming out in 2014, it’s about a Christian family and all the ups and downs this large family has. Enjoy the escapades of Caleb and Sami that Helen and I have put together.

CHAPTER 1

Caleb and his family were getting ready for the once a year fun time celebration. It was the Fourth of July picnic. Friends and neighbors were bringing well filled baskets of food. The picnic tables were loaded with pies, cakes, salads and lots of mouthwatering fried chicken.

The music in the background had everyone humming along with familiar patriotic songs they all knew and kept them in a happy mood. The men were exchanging stories of the wars they had served in and were thankful for their freedom.

As day began to fade into evening, everyone complained that they ate too much and how good everything was, they were anxious for the fireworks to begin. The mothers remind the children to be careful with the hot wires and then they were given sparklers to enjoy. Caleb's father had help when he brought out a lot of fireworks to light up the sky.

It was the first Fourth of July for Sami, the nice German Shepard dog that had wandered in to them less than a year ago. When the noisy celebration began Sami hid under a table in the driveway. Everyone oohed and aahed they enjoyed all the bright colors in the sky and didn't want the evening to end.

After the fireworks were over, the tables were cleaned up and put away. It was then the family realized that Sami was no longer there. Caleb became very upset and Mother had to convince him that Sami would be found. Everyone started going in different directions looking and calling, but Sami was nowhere to be found. After a few hours the search was called off. Everyone started to return to their homes but promised to be back in the morning to see if Sami had returned. It was decided that if Sami had not come home during the night the search would began again in the morning.
