Overview

This exquisitely illustrated volume celebrates the lives of men and women whose goodness and religious devotion have inspired millions. Here, arranged according to their special days throughout the year, are saints across the centuries and from every walk of life—farm laborers, princes, monks, nuns, soldiers, martyrs, housewives, poets. On almost every page, inspirational sayings illustrate the courage, humor, and wisdom of those who put their religious commitment before everything else. Lavish illustrations—with more than 300 paintings, many in color—form a resplendent gallery of portraits spanning 2,000 years of art. Dr. James Bentley is an anthropologist, historian, and former senior chaplain of Eton College.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA James Bentley, Catholic priest and journalist, presents a fascinating portrayal of 365 personalities bonded together over the centuries by their devotion to Jesus Christ. The saints' lives are placed in historical context, with a capsulized sketch of their ordeals and martyrdom. Quotations from the saints are used throughout the book; this provides a powerful glimpse of their intellect. The format of this book is particularly appealing. Fine quality paper is used, and each page is lavishly illustrated in color with portraits of the saints chosen from Christian art spanning almost 2,000 years. It is unfortunate that there is no statement explaining the terms by which the saints were selected by the church and by the author. This book will be used primarily by YAs for research, but once discovered, the extraordinary lives within will capture their own audience. Anne Douglass, Houston Public Library
