A reissue of the 1941 Calico the Wonder Horse: Or the Saga of Stewy Stinker by Virginia Lee Burton uses a snappy comic-strip format, complete with lightning bolts and clouds of churned-up dust, for its tale of good and evil in the wild West. The Bad Men of the Badlands, outsmarted at every turn by equine superheroine Calico, finally renounce robbing and rustling and promise to be good. Construction-paper colored backgrounds set off the black-and-white block prints by the Caldecott Medalist.
"Burton's rootin'-tootin' comic-book-style Western was and still is completely original, with its varied-colored pages and experimental graphic design. i! Yi! Whoopee!to the publishers for reissuing this progressive and energetic classic—with the villain's name properly and alliteratively restored to boot." Horn Book, Fanfare
