Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lilliam Oliva Collmann
Like other books in the "Ciencia asombrosa (Amazing Science)" series, this book thoroughly covers the most fascinating scientific facts about, in this case, the star closest to earth, the sun. It explains how the sun lies at the center of our solar system and its relationship to the nine planets. By posing questions that a child might ask, the book tells us where the sun is in the morning, in the middle of the afternoon, and at night because of the movement of the earth on its axis around the sun. Given that the earth moves like a spinning top, the sun can only cover part of the earth, giving us day and night. It compares the sun's light and heat to what is familiar: a chimney but a lot more powerful. It features unique aspects of the sun: its black spots and solar eruptions. What makes it cold in the winter and hot in the summer? The sun and the angle and movement of the earth on its axis around the sun give us the seasons of the year. While the sun provides necessary heat and daylight for us to thrive and plants to grow, we must also protect ourselves from the intensity of the sunrays for they can damage our skin and hurt our eyes if we look directly at the sun. This book also includes a table of contents, an index, an instructional activity for tracking the sun's shadows, an additional page of interesting facts, a glossary, and a page with library and Internet resources. Its eye-catching illustrations invite the young reader to turn the page and support a greater understanding of the facts. Undoubtedly, this book would be a great contribution to a kindergarten through second grade science curriculum.
