Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Books written by a committee seldom show much flair (excepting, of course, the King James Bible), and this small volume in the "One Nation" series is no exception. Trying for a little drama, the text begins with a brief description of the 1994 earthquake in Los Angeles, adds a few earthquake facts and concludes of California "people love it anyway." True, but it is hard to tell why from the short, clipped sentences doling out facts about geography and population. The history section is a bit more interesting, if young readers can stick with its uninspiring style. A quick tour of the state's sightseeing attractions finishes off the book. It is too bad that the photographs showing such a vibrant and varied state are mostly dingy and grayed. Even the California poppies, usually a glowing golden orange, look dull and dim. While some of the extra features (a short timeline, a glossary, "Famous Californians") may be helpful, probably the best idea for researchers would be to investigate other books mentioned in the bibliography or to visit the Internet sites listed. (Revised and Updated Edition) 2003, Capstone, Talcroft
