    You should read now!

AS a lover and casual desert explorer, I found this book remarkable. To have a first hand account of travelling the sparcely populated southern california desert in 1917 is truly one of a kind. Most writers were armchair desert explorers, traveling in the cool of the winter in short trips gathering data often second hand. Chase had to know the desert more closely than that. He travelled on horseback for hundreds of miles during the hot summer with water sources often a days ride away from eachother. The reader of this book can feel the thirst and the sweat of the author as his daily ride would stretch out to forty or more miles to reach his next water source. Like his earlier books, Chase fills his idle horseback time with charming poetic interludes coresponding with the desolate terrain. He had a constant sense of the past and knew by the changes in the land that his ride was timely. After two years of constant exploration of plants , animals ,geography , and local desert settlers , he put to print the most readable account of the southern california desert.
