Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
The history, culture, and current status of the Indian tribes of California are explored in this informative and readable book, which is part of a series that chronicles the stories of the first people to live in North America. Rather than just provide a series of facts, the book adheres to a narrative timeline, beginning with the arrival of American Indians in California, and ending with descriptions of how they live today. In between are explanations about the food the California Indians ate, the houses they lived in, and how their way of life changed when non-Indians arrived. The book also describes the importance of legends and beliefs in their everyday lives. Each chapter begins with a question about the California Indians and then answers that question using text, written in short, declarative sentences; historical and current photographs; maps; charts; and drawings and paintings. Short biographical sketches of prominent California Indians are also included. There is no question that the use of an expert consultant, Dr. Scott Manning Sevens, a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, has contributed to the value of this book. Except for a few proofreading errors, the book is well written, and the attitude taken toward the subject is objective, respectful, and devoid of propaganda of any kind. Simply from the facts presented, the reader will quickly grasp that life for the California Indians changed drastically when non-Indians arrived. While this book does not try to address all the ramifications of what happened, it could provide teachers and parents with an excellent foundation from which to explore questions surrounding the lives of the American Indians. The book includes a timeline, a glossary, ideas for further research, and an index. Any school considering a unit on American Indians would benefit from obtaining the entire series.
