Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The Gareth Stevens publishing group continues to provide excellent educational series books for younger readers using an even-handed approach to historical context. In this text, The California Missions, readers are provided with the Native view as well as the Spanish history of the creation of twenty-one missions along the California coast, from San Diego north to San Francisco. Each book in the series follows the same format, and in this text, the introduction shows us the first mission built in California and explains the Spanish influence. It then discusses what happened to the Native Americans, their numbers decimated first by the diseases brought by the Spanish and then mistreated at the hands of gold-hungry miners. The book goes into detail on how these groups interacted through the use of pictures and illustrations based on research into the time period as well as quotes from priests, soldiers, and Native peoples. A conclusion refocuses the young reader on the place/situation, then explains what has happened to the locale in the present. In the case of the California Missions, each one has been rebuilt and provides insights into the history of the state as well as the Catholic faith (the text tells us that the Catholic church has reclaimed 2/3 of the missions and their lands). Final sections of the text include a timeline, glossary of the words previously bold-faced in the text, a reference section, and a wonderful "Things to Think About and Do" section that provides suggestions for teachers/readers to help assess both an understanding of the text as well as how one applies the reading to relevant, current-day issues. 2002, Gareth Stevens Publishing,

Gr 3-5-These serviceable titles provide brief vignettes of American history in which care is taken to represent varying points of view. In Jamestown, the Native American perspective is expressed, albeit primarily through speculation since there are no primary-source materials for Native history. Excerpts from letters by settlers are included, along with the helpful notation that because the settlers were often trying to interest others in emigrating, their descriptions were not always realistic and/or accurate. Pocahontas's rescue of John Smith is presented as legend, not fact. Weber and Anderson detail Spain's objectives in establishing the mission system. Depending on one's perspective, the Catholic priests were seen as heroes for furthering Spanish settlements in California or as villains for destroying the culture and religion of the Native peoples and subjecting them to forced labor. In The Alamo, the causes for the Texas-Mexican battle are outlined, again in an objective manner. Yes, Texans wanted personal freedom, but they also wanted cheap land and the right to own slaves. Neither side is presented as perfect or as an unprovoked aggressor. Good-quality paintings, photos, or reproductions appear on every spread, and there are a few maps and diagrams. These books are on a similar reading level to the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series (Children's). Useful supplements for report writers.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
