Introduction

SEEKING PLACES LESS CROWDED

Have you ever traced a finger along a highway map, or glanced at a freeway offramp and pondered: "That road looks inviting; I wonder where it would take us?" Most of us have a little gypsy in our souls.

For many people, the best way to spend a vacation — or a retirement — is to load up the RV or family sedan and strike out on a voyage of discovery. Problem is, too many of us follow the same freeways and highways to the same places. We're drawn to our most popular parks, resort areas and historic sites; our voyages of discovery are disrupted by crowds and traffic.

This is the first in a series of guidebooks for gypsy spirits — those who want to follow roads less traveled to places less crowded. It's for folks with a sense of adventure, who prefer hideaway resorts to high rise hotels or woodsy campgrounds to asphalt RV parks.

We have toured, photographed and written about Western America for more than thirty years. Nearly everywhere we've gone, we've discovered fascinating and wonderful places that often are missed by the mainstream traveler. Many of these uncrowded areas offer as much appeal as the more popular vacation spots. In California and Nevada, for instance, we'll guide you to national parks that are both interesting and uncrowded, to wonderful beaches that even in summer aren't too heavily trodden, and to wineries whose tasting rooms aren't overwhelmed by visitors.

Traveling in "Ickybod," our faithful Toyota-mount Winnebago, we've explored every corner of California and Nevada, following highways and byways — but very few freeways — to those special uncrowded places. After spending months on the road, we've stitched together a series of driving trips, with attendant maps to help keep you on course.

Along our less traveled roads, we suggest interesting places to dine and recline, seeking cafs and lodgings that may not be represented in regular travel guides. We're partial to quaint old hotels, bed & breakfast inns, country diners and hideaway resorts — places where you can relax, far from the madding crowds. Our selections range from budget accommodations to some of the West's most opulent resorts.

Our gypsy wanderings will appeal to RVers, particularly retired folks and others with lots of time to explore. Thus, the "Roads Less Traveled" series features "RV Advisories" that point out steep climbs, rough roads, hairpin turns and other conditions that might challenge large motorhomes or trailer rigs. And they help you find places to park in towns along the way. We also recommends interesting campgrounds along our routes.

The advisories are based on signs we've observed and on our own experiences with our twenty-one-foot "Ickybod." Of course, our judgments are subjective and based on our driving ability, which may differ from yours.
