Bella Bree MacGowan is in California with her boyfriend trying to do anything but be part of another "accidental" murder investigation. She was just standing there trying to enjoy the view, take some pictures, and not see a woman fall off a bridge after being shot in the head. For pity sake what is it with people being killed around her?
Bree learns fast that this murder has ties to the rich and powerful who know how to bury the secrets along with the bodies. Figuring out who all the players are and what affiliation they have to what branch of the government is just the beginning of the nightmare; the shape-shifting alien is another problem - say what? Bree is not buying any of the stories she is being fed, but after she is drugged, kidnapped, and forcible detained against her will she begins to wonder if her only salvation is going to come from some otherworldly place. Everyone around her apparently has no worry for her safety or the truth only the desire to fix the mess the high profile Senator has created.
However, Bree is not going quietly into the kidnapping night she is going to figure out an escape route and hopefully well escape. She has no background in any of this cloak and dagger world but if she uses her journalism skills, she can write a way out of this disaster and maybe figure out who the real skunk is.
Wow, this book is fun and it is nonstop action with an adventure at every page. Bree is so amazing and just not going to say, "I can't do this" at any time. The men may prove a challenge but I suspect there is something good happening in the next chapter of Bree's life, just stay tuned.

Schemin's a good old fashioned cozy mystery that infuses the author's witty sense of humor, plenty of suspense, some great writing, and an engaging and action-packed plot.
Poor Bree, trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes. Hot off the heels of a murder investigation in which she was the prime suspect, Bree travels across country in hopes to get away on a relaxing vacation with new boyfriend, Beau. Unfortunately for Bree, while bird watching one afternoon; she witnesses a murder in progress. Natch! Who hasn't gone on vacation and stumbled smack in the midst of a murder or two at one time or another? Even worse, the killers know there is a witness and will stop at nothing to find her and silence her for good! And when Bree is taken against her will, that's when the laughter really begins. Will Bree ever see her beloved animals again, her best friend or, for that matter, Vermont?
George's knack for creating really great three-dimensional characters, that are anything but mundane, is a breath of fresh air. It's hard not to admire Bree for her laid-back, stumble-into-trouble personality. After all, it's her adventurous ways coupled with her stubbornness that continues to place her in harm's way, giving George a winning combination for a truly entertaining read.
Schemin' hits the ground running and never lets up! Although a cozy murder mystery, George's comical sense of humor has the reader gripped in suspense on the one hand, and laughing out loud on the other.

If you like chase scenes, then this is the book for you. I don't particularly. I prefer character development and plausible, though unpredictable, plots. But I flound this book lacking on both those features. And I couldn ' t understand the significance of the shape shifter. The book started out with promise, but I felt I was forcing myself to finish it.

The plot of this mystery was kind of weak. I enjoyed the location because im from the sacramento area. It grabs you from the start with a murder taking place on the first pg but the reason for the murder and the subsequent events isnt believable for me. And whats the deal with the shapeshifter? That seemed really out of place.

This book started off a little slow then all at once I realized it had grabbed my interest. This is the sort of book that sneaks up on you and before you know it you are addicted to the heroine, Bree. Some reviewers have wrote about the humor in this book, which even though this may seem odd, was really tense situations seen in a strange or humorous manner. It had wacky characters, an adorable skunk, dogs you have to love, a cat to hate and a horse with attitude. The heroine was fiesty not taking any guff off anyone, which I really enjoyed. If you are looking for a novel with the plot all wrapped up in a nice neat bundle, then this book is not for you. There are a lot of loose ends, which I am hoping will be resolved in book three. I am going to purchase book one in this series also. California Scheming was the second book of the series. This book could have had better editing, but it was still a great read.
