Overview

This exciting new series gives young readers their first in-depth look at the United States. Each volume provides a colorful, comprehensive portrait of a state's history, people, land, economy, and government. Readers will enjoy the "Fun Facts" sprinkled throughout each book and learn even more about state facts, symbols, and famous people. A chapter on "Things to See and Do" explores each state's unique places and activities. Each title includes a time line, biographies of notable people, informative maps and charts, a glossary, recommended books and Web sites, and an index.

With its sunshine, year-round warmth, endless beaches, and rich history-including its colorful Gold Rush period-California has many reasons to be known as "The Golden State." It shines with promise and delivers mountains, redwood forests, a vast sea coast, and vibrant cities. The state's industries range from practical Silicon Valley computer software to fanciful Disneyland and star-studded Hollywood. Its vineyards produce world-class wines; its farmers provide much of the rest of the nation with year-round fruits and vegetables. People of many ethnic backgrounds call California home.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-These titles are written in a more conversational tone, with larger print and less text, than the popular "America the Beautiful" books or "From Sea to Shining Sea" series (both Children's Press). The books are colorful and eye-catching, with captioned photos, easy-to-read charts, maps, and boxes containing "Fun Facts" and "Famous People." Although readers will find the asides interesting, the abundance of extra information on each page occasionally interrupts the flow of the text. One shortfall is that all four books cite Hispanics as a distinct group and a distinct percentage of the state's residents, but they do not appear as such on the population pie chart.
