To commemorate hitting the 15-year mark, the Red Hot Chili Peppers reunited with guitarist John Frusciante and producer Rick Rubin (from 1991's triumphant Blood Sugar Sex Magik) and headed for the studio. With the band having matured at least a little in those years, Californication contains more sun-baked slow ones than your usual RHCP disc, but that doesn't mean the fire's gone out. Frontman Anthony Kiedis seems comfortable in his mellower "Under the Bridge" mode, singing about home and relationships instead of spieling out hard-partying raps. Frusciante is back in form, unraveling cheerful, tricky Hendrix homages, while bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith remain a nonpareil funk-rock rhythm section, locking in and grooving whenever they get the chance. All fronts come together on the breathless new wave of "Parallel Universe," the taut and snappy "I Like Dirt," and "Right on Time," an ultra high-energy snatch of disco. It's on songs like these, when the Chili Peppers hit that perfect beat, that you can almost hear the grins spreading on the band's faces.

All Music Guide - Greg Prato
Many figured that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' days as undisputed alternative kings were numbered after their lackluster 1995 release One Hot Minute, but like the great phoenix rising from the ashes, this legendary and influential outfit returned back to greatness with 1999's Californication. An obvious reason for their rebirth is the reappearance of guitarist John Frusciante (replacing Dave Navarro), who left the Peppers in 1992 and disappeared into a haze of hard drugs before cleaning up and returning to the fold in 1998. Frusciante was a main reason for such past band classics as 1989's Mother's Milk and 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and proves once and for all to be the quintessential RHCP guitarist. Anthony Kiedis' vocals have improved dramatically as well, while the rhythm section of bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith remains one of rock's best. The quartet's trademark punk-funk can be sampled on such tracks as "Around the World," "I Like Dirt," and "Parallel Universe," but the more pop-oriented material proves to be a pleasant surprise -- "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Easily," and "Purple Stain" all contain strong melodies and instantly memorable choruses. And like their 1992 introspective hit "Under the Bridge," there are even a few mellow moments -- "Porcelain," "Road Trippin'," and the title track. With the instrumentalists' interplay at an all-time telepathic high and Kiedis peaking as a vocalist, Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.

this is an amazing album, that chili fan's had to wait a long while for. this album was most definitely worth the wait! th album kicks of with the hard -edged, rocky 'around the world', which shows that the chilis still have their roots, but also indulges us in melodic beauties, such as 'otherside' and 'porcelain'.this doesn't even mention the wonderful 'scar tissue', one of my favourite songs of all time. finally, if your into the whole guitar thang, check out 'californication'. the guitar is amazing! overall a really good modern album from the almighty chilis.

this album will be one that i could listen to now or in twenty years. just as my father has passed ''the wall'' and ''morrison hotel'' on vinyl onto me, the excellent quality that continues throughout the album is one that could be appreciated for years to come.

The cd has a pleasent mix on mellow and slower verses, energeic rock and in between. It could be just my taste, but, on whole, the cd is very pleasing in its diversity of song genre. Each track has a personality which is very enjoyable.

CALIFORNICATION is undoubtly the greatest CD of the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. It was haunting melodies of life and some almost rap-rock songs, like the first song: AROUND THE WORLD. Deep songs include: PARRELL UNIVERSE, OTHERSIDE, CALIFORNICATION, EASILY, PROCELAIN, THIS VELVET GLOVE, SAVIOR, and ROAD TRIPPIN'. The Chili Peppers did well creating their own universe and original ideas: a video game for CALIFORNICATION, and a demented futuristic world where anything can heppen for OTHERSIDE. The music, lyrics, bass, guitar, drums and everything in this album is great and every single one of the songs is worth litening to, even: I LIKE DIRT, GET ON TOP, PURPLE STAIN and EIMIT REMMUS(Summer Time.) The Chili Peppers rule as does their music. Much of their music is showing a weirder part of life with lyrics like:HOW LONG, HOW LONG, WILL I SLIDE? SEPERATE MY SIDE. I DON'T. I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S BAD, SLIT MY THROAT IT'S ALL I EVER... which is from OTHERSIDE, the best song on the album. CALIFORNICATIOn is really an album you can jam to and think about.

I think that the chili peppers are one of the most happening bands in the world. They're always on the top of the music chart lists. They even change their style when people like different kinds of music.

Some fantastic songs, so good to listen to and so soothing. Get in your head too. My advice: Get it, but don't expect all songs to be good. Red Hot Chili Peppers have a unique style, but a lot of their songs are too similar...

Although a great change from their previous cds, Californication is a perfect blend of beat with guitar and vocals! I recommend buying this cd, no matter what type of music you enjoy! ''SUCK MY KISS!''

RHCP show their growth and musical brilliance on this consistently excellent release. Their songcraft keeps getting better. This should please all who hear it without any preconceived notions of what the RHCP are all about.

this was a great cd. Every track is good, and worth listening to. I don't know if it's as good as BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK, but it was close.

As an owner of all 7 of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' albums, it is very interesting to hear the changes made to their sound as they have progressed throughout the years. This is certainly their best yet: with ex-guitarist John Frusciante back on board, they have taken the formula used for '91's Blood Sugar Sex Magik and extended it in a breathtakingly wondeful album. This is an album of extremes: the Peppers' tender ballad style first featured on Blood Sugar is used again on Californication in even better and melodic tracks like Scar Tissue, Otherside and Porcelain. On the other hand, their rap metal style is also even more heavy and funky (Around The World, Get On Top, Purple Stain)while Anthony's voice is used wonderfully as he proves his vocal talents on all tracks that many critics thought he didn't possess. The title track is arguably the finest song on the album; as their most popular song and only no. 1, it is a favourite among many fans. There are no bad tracks here. The mood carried throughout the album moves swiftly; sometimes sombre, sometimes poignant, sometimes wild; but always entertaining and always wonderful. One of the most influential bands of the last 20 years have produced a comeback album in the highest style, bouncing from the brink of extinction to having a multi-platinum album enjoyed by fans ''around the world.'' As Anthony, Flea, John, Chad and producer Rick Rubin gather together to make an 8th album, one can only wonder whether any effort from the guys who produced this classic could possibly exceed themselves yet again.

Californication is a huge success. Red hot Chile Pepper's came back from a relaxation only to top the charts with a new album. With the return of former guitarist, Frucsiente, the Pepper's renewed themselves with the hit CD, Californication. The Pepper's, although having a 15 year Failure/Success band, are the inspiration of today's new artists. The album first interested me when I watched the music video of Californication. It grabbed my attention by the lyrics and beats. As soon as I heard the music again on the radio, I ran over and bought the CD. All the song on the CD just blew me away. The majority of songs have interesting lyrics, while the others have amusing beats. Overall The Red Hot Chile Peppers have really outdone themselves. I deeply hope the Inspirers of the new Music hit come back with as new Album for me to be. Overall, the Red Hot Chile Peppers score 4 Stars out of 5!

Californication is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' greatest effort and the greatest album ever made. Their trademark funk metal sound is used in stunning new ways in Around The World, and raps like Get On Top and I Like Dirt are still impressive despite being miles from the album's best bits. Songs like Scar Tissue, Ohererside and This Velvet Glove overflow with melody and pure emotion. Easily is incredible, with a literally breathtaking guitar solo at the end. Anthony Kiedis' lyrics are far better than ever before, and surprise constantly with mind-blowing introspection and intensity. The title track brilliantly explores the shallowness of Hollywood and sums it up perfectly with the chorus of ''Dream of Californication...'' Songs like Californication and Savior have irresistible harmonies and explosive vocals. Flea's bass guitar is a key part to the album, forcefully pushing the music while drummer Chad Smith beats out fantastic rhythms. Returned guitarist John Frusciante amazes with incredible guitar solos; like on the aforementioned Easily, and on the dreamy Road Trippin', which includes Kiedis' key lyric, ''Just a mirror for the sun...'', a song which shows the singer's need to explore, and just live. Kiedis' voice is much more melodic and sounds far more confident, and each band member has made startling progress which makes Californication a true triumph. I have been listening to this album for 2 and a half years now and I am still discovering new things about it. Every home should have one. Key tracks: Otherside, Californication, Road Trippin'.
