Barnes & Noble - Douglas Wolk
To commemorate hitting the 15-year mark, the Red Hot Chili Peppers reunited with guitarist John Frusciante and producer Rick Rubin from 1991's triumphant Blood Sugar Sex Magik and headed for the studio. Frontman Anthony Kiedis seems comfortable in his mellower "Under the Bridge" mode, singing about home and relationships instead of spieling out hard-partying raps. Frusciante is back in form, unraveling cheerful, tricky Hendrix homages, while bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith remain a nonpareil funk-rock rhythm section, locking in and grooving whenever they get the chance. All fronts come together on the breathless new wave of "Parallel Universe," the taut and snappy "I Like Dirt," and "Right on Time," an ultra high-energy snatch of disco. It's on songs like these, when the Chili Peppers hit that perfect beat, that you can almost hear the grins spreading on the band's faces.
All Music Guide - Greg Prato
Many figured that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' days as undisputed alternative kings were numbered after their lackluster 1995 release One Hot Minute, but like the great phoenix rising from the ashes, this legendary and influential outfit returned back to greatness with 1999's Californication. An obvious reason for their rebirth is the reappearance of guitarist John Frusciante replacing Dave Navarro, who left the Peppers in 1992 and disappeared into a haze of hard drugs before cleaning up and returning to the fold in 1998. Frusciante was a main reason for such past band classics as 1989's Mother's Milk and 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and proves once and for all to be the quintessential RHCP guitarist. Anthony Kiedis' vocals have improved dramatically as well, while the rhythm section of bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith remains one of rock's best. The quartet's trademark punk-funk can be sampled on such tracks as "Around the World," "I Like Dirt," and "Parallel Universe," but the more pop-oriented material proves to be a pleasant surprise -- "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Easily," and "Purple Stain" all contain strong melodies and instantly memorable choruses. And like their 1992 introspective hit "Under the Bridge," there are even a few mellow moments -- "Porcelain," "Road Trippin'," and the title track. With the instrumentalists' interplay at an all-time telepathic high and Kiedis peaking as a vocalist, Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.

This is one of the all-time best albums! reuniting with guitarist John Frusciante, The Chili Pep's put out this amazing CD. The best songs are the first seven tracks, Emit Rummus, and Road Trippin'. if you want to hear RHCP at their very best, buy this album ASAP!

    I'm late to the party!

I remember my brother and I up late one night watching music videos. To give you an idea of how long ago this was, they actually showed music videos. It was in the early morning and the video for 'Catholic School Girls Rule' came on. We were laughing the whole time. But the next day a funny thing happened. I found myself humming the song in my head. I was hooked and they were my favorite band. The album 'Californication' came out and I passed it off. They even won some awards for it and I still dismissed the whole experience. Fast forward to the present. My girlfriend has the CD and is playing it. The last track came on, Road Trippin', and I was hooked once again. O.K. I've mellowed out since the 'Back Woods' days but this whole album is such an awesome collaboration that you can't ignore it. How did I let this one get by I don't know but the songs that I heard on the radio then are still fresh and I've found something that will stay in my car all summer long.

Awesome music! Terrible mastering! Digital Clipping Nightmare!

The music is, absolutely brilliant as are the mixes. But mastering? RHCP is a talented band being seriously injured by their mastering engineer. Vlado Meller (the mastering engineer) seriously needs to recognize that there is a limit to the CD format (around -9 db RMS), and this whole loudness war is BS. If I want my music to be louder, I'll turn up the f%$*&g volume control. This whole CD is swamped by distortion. American Idiot is the loudest you can go on a CD while still pretending that it has any dynamic range. Californication is at the point where it is hard to pretend it is not just white noise! Folks, if you can't hear the high-frequency clicks and distortion, then you really need to check your hearing, 'cause you probably need a hearing aid ) And RHCP? Please, please, please keep your CDs to a more un-compressed level. Something that people like me can actually listen to. It's sad when even an "intelligent" de-clipping algorithm like the GenieSys declipper cannot save your album. And hey, if you want to keep producing your albums like Californication, fine. But please give all of us audiophiles access to a recording that has not been mastered, at least not so aggressively.

    Good, but not great.

Heralded as the return of best Chili Peppers line-up, it is. But don't let anyone fool you by saying it's the line-up from their best album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It is, but the same four guys also played on THE album, Mother's Milk (undeniably one of the best albums of All Time). Also, don't let anyone tell you that their last album, One Hot Minute (with guitarist Dave Navarro) was their rock-n-roll album. It was damn Funky. CALIFORNICATION is good, but not their best effort. It has its moments of jammin' and funk, like "Purple Stain," "Get On Top" and "Right on Time," but "Scar Tissue," another ballad like "My Friends" and the re-released "Behind the Sun." Why? The Chili Peppers need to let the Funk roll. - - - - - - - - - - Rating: B - (You want the funky Chili Peppers? Pick up Freaky Styley [1985] & Mother's Milk [1989])

    ABSOLUTLY EXTRODINARY!

Again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers make another amazing cd, but this is one of the greatest cd's by the Peppers. The lyrics and guitar are amazing! I personally like absolutly every song in this cd, I cant say anything bad or wrong about it. I love the ending of Parelle Universe, the bass in Around The World and the solos in Scar Tissue and Californiacation(of corse!!!). I recomend this cd to any Chili Pepper fan; how can you go without it!?!

    Amazing

This album really shows you the difference between a classic and a masterpiece. The powerful music that the RHCP preform in this album is really powerfull stuff. The lyrics (especially in Californication) are exceptional. The RHCP do a great job with this CD, by showing us just how crazy california really is (just take a look at the great cover art). The great guitar playing of John Fruiscante really compliments this album very well. This really is a must buy album.

    great

I remember when I knew I had to have this CD after I heard Otherside on the radio. This is such a great CD and proved to the world that they were real musicians. There are a number of great songs here especially the more mellowed out ones like Scar Tissue, Otherside (my favorite) and the title track. These songs speak to a listener on so many different levels it's crazy...sort of genius.

    How About Purple Stain?

People rarely mention this song, and granted it's not the best one on the album...BUT, I urge all who are even remotely into this album to give the jam another whirl...wait until they start jamming for the last 2 minutes of the song...sounds a tad like it should be it's own song, yet fits nicely at the end here. It's a perfectly realized jam with some amazing drum rolls by Chad (how does he have an extra arm to hit the cymbals in there??) Many of the songs on this CD have some nice Jams to finish the songs out, like Around The World, though that one isn't nearly as genious as Purple Stain...check it out, you'll see what I'm saying! (Note--Crank it up with some good headphones on...)

    This CD is a masterpiece

The Chili Peppers are one of the the best bands out there these days, and Californication is their by far their best CD. The best songs are "Californication", Otherside, Scar Tissue & Easily. I don't really like their rap/metal, but Around the World is pretty good.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers: Californication

This is a great album by a great band. Top to bottom, this is one of the best albums I own. "By The Way" is good, but this c.d. is much better. The best track is "Around the World" in my opinion. It was awesome! Buy this album if you like rock in general. Thanks for reading.

    Truly Beautiful Music

I have about 400 albums in my CD collection and Californication has got to be one of my favourite 10. This album is truly stunning. John Frusciante shows us more of his melodic style of guitar playing (we here it first on Under the Bridge/Could Have Lied/Sir Psycho Sexy outro - BSSM), one which is extremely tuneful and yet still full of raw energy. My favourite track on this album has got to be ''This Velvet Glove''. Listen carefully to the way he plays the repeated single note in the verse section, throwing in the odd unison bend, he's truly on fire. Every track on this album simply oozes class. These guys are extremely talented and you've got to buy this album now.

    The RHCP era of 1999

This c.d. is what got me listening to the red hot chili peppers. During the summer i saw the Californacation and Otherside music video. I liked those songs so i downloaded them off napster. Then i got the c.d. for X-Mas and i was suprised at its greatness. It was the perfict blend of rock/rap/punk/funk. It soon became my favorite c.d. I best enjoyed This Velvet Glove,Parralel Universe, and Savior. BY THIS ALBUM. I ORDER U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The best album ever.

Californication is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' greatest effort and the greatest album ever made. Their trademark funk metal sound is used in stunning new ways in Around The World, and raps like Get On Top and I Like Dirt are still impressive despite being miles from the album's best bits. Songs like Scar Tissue, Ohererside and This Velvet Glove overflow with melody and pure emotion. Easily is incredible, with a literally breathtaking guitar solo at the end. Anthony Kiedis' lyrics are far better than ever before, and surprise constantly with mind-blowing introspection and intensity. The title track brilliantly explores the shallowness of Hollywood and sums it up perfectly with the chorus of ''Dream of Californication...'' Songs like Californication and Savior have irresistible harmonies and explosive vocals. Flea's bass guitar is a key part to the album, forcefully pushing the music while drummer Chad Smith beats out fantastic rhythms. Returned guitarist John Frusciante amazes with incredible guitar solos; like on the aforementioned Easily, and on the dreamy Road Trippin', which includes Kiedis' key lyric, ''Just a mirror for the sun...'', a song which shows the singer's need to explore, and just live. Kiedis' voice is much more melodic and sounds far more confident, and each band member has made startling progress which makes Californication a true triumph. I have been listening to this album for 2 and a half years now and I am still discovering new things about it. Every home should have one. Key tracks: Otherside, Californication, Road Trippin'.

Red Hot Chile Pepper's are here to stay with Californication!

Californication is a huge success. Red hot Chile Pepper's came back from a relaxation only to top the charts with a new album. With the return of former guitarist, Frucsiente, the Pepper's renewed themselves with the hit CD, Californication. The Pepper's, although having a 15 year Failure/Success band, are the inspiration of today's new artists. The album first interested me when I watched the music video of Californication. It grabbed my attention by the lyrics and beats. As soon as I heard the music again on the radio, I ran over and bought the CD. All the song on the CD just blew me away. The majority of songs have interesting lyrics, while the others have amusing beats. Overall The Red Hot Chile Peppers have really outdone themselves. I deeply hope the Inspirers of the new Music hit come back with as new Album for me to be. Overall, the Red Hot Chile Peppers score 4 Stars out of 5!
