The soundtrack for season three of Showtime's Californication offers up a nice balance of old and new, but like any TV or film-based compilation of songs, the lack of a visual aid results in a fairly schizophrenic listening experience where you're forced to compartmentalize both the works of country-folk crooner Jimmy LaFave and feces-throwing punk legend G.G. Allin. That is to say, it doesn't sit well when digested in a single setting.
