Overview

Sometimes One Hero Isn’t Enough

Mack MacAvoy suffers from a serious case of mediumness. Medium looks. Medium grades. And with a list of phobias that could make anyone crazy, Mack never would have guessed that he is destined for a more-than-medium life.

And then one day a three-thousand-year-old man named Grimluk appears and delivers some startling news: Mack is one of the Magnificent 12. An evil force is on its way and it’s up to Mack to track down eleven other twelve-year-olds to stop it. He will battle the wicked Ereskigal, also known as Risky. But Risky sounds a little scary and Mack doesn’t want to be a hero. Will he answer the call?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Until the 3,000-year-old man appeared in the boys' room, middle-schooler Mack MacAvoy had resigned himself to leading a middling, unexceptional life. That was before the ancient bathroom crasher identified Mack as one of The Magnificent Twelve, a group of talented12-year-olds who have been empowered the save the world. Before they can do that, however, Mack must track down these other special children and prepare to do battle. Action, magic, and laughs.
Children's Literature
Twelve-year-old Mack MacAvoy spends each and every day at school being average until two incredible things happen. First, the biggest bully in school becomes his companion. Next, an old man named Grimluk informs Mack that he is one of the Magnificent Twelve, destined to be a hero and stop the evil Pale Queen. Now Mack and his new buddy, Stefan, must form a league to save the world. Of course, our hero is a tad immature to be venturing all over the world 3,000 years ago, especially when he has more phobias than socks and no way to hide his disappearance. Oh yes, he also has his own golem which changes form to become his exact double. The golem adds comic relief throughout the book as Mack takes the more serious role of fighting Risky, the evil daughter of the Pale Queen. As the story flashes back and forth from present to past, the reader must pay close attention to the story line, to avoid becoming confused Grant creates lovable characters. Even the bully, Stefan, can make the reader laugh and sympathize with his wild perils as he protects Mack. This book definitely reads as part of a series because we only get a taste of the plot and a lot is left to the imagination. It seems more targeted to boys, but there is a strong female character that would appeal to girls. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
Kirkus Reviews

The first book in Grant's new series, The Magnificent 12, introduces unlikely hero Mack, who has "a serious case of mediumness" and a vast array of phobias. Enter Grimluk, a 3,000-year-old man who informs Mack that he is to be the first of the new Magnifica, a group of 12 kids who must join their talents and inherited-yet-unknown powers to fight the evil Pale Queen and her vicious daughter. Reluctant and frankly freaked out by this news, Mack and former bully, now guardian friend Stefan team up to evade deadly attentions from a seriously creepy set of insect-like monsters and demonic elves. The author keeps the story moving at a brisk pace with suspenseful action and laugh-out-loud humor. The juxtaposition of chapters that recount Grimluk's ancient adventures in times when math wasn't even invented against those when the young protagonist is equipped with an iPhone and receives text messages from his golem produces a lighter-than-usual fantasy action-adventure that is sure to win many fans and fly off the shelves. (Fantasy. 10-14)

Percy Jackson meets Wimpy Kid- Mack must save the world from the pale queen

Mack is a kid who is afraid of everything but mainly about getting beat up by the school bully. He ends up saving the bully who now becomes his bodyguard and it is a good thing because he needs one if he is going to find the other Magnifica and save the world from certain destruction from the Pale Queen. This series is as funny and action packed as Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and as goofy as Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Kids will identify with the characters and will read this book cover to cover in one sitting. Can't wait for the next installment.

    Well...

Okay, this book is funny. But, it was kind of "out there." It was really hard to understand and I almost quit reading it. I liked it, but I don't think I'll be reading any more of this series.

    We loved it!

Our 8 year old asked us every night to read the story to her. We could't wait to read it either. The humor makes it such a fun read. We are on to book two.

    Funny

Dorky yet effective jokes. The story and characters are sort of pathetic and predictable but it wasnt a bad book. I enjoyed it. I might not read it again or reccomend that someone buys it but it was entertaining, Get it at your library if you must read it because although an ok book i dont suggest paying money for it. Also it was too short. Much too short.

    Terry Pratchet wanna-be

This is for young adults rather than for readers in search of good tongue in cheek fantasy. I found the jokes too sophomoric. I've not decided whether to read the next book.

    Loved it!

Mack is the unlikely hero. He has a phobia for everything and therefore being a hero was never on his to-do list. At the age of twelve he is called by magic to save the world from the Pale Queen who has been locked away for 3,000 years. The old ones thought that was forever but the 3,000 years are almost up and they must unite the 12 who possess the enlightened puissance to save the world. There are forces, mainly a very angry daughter named Princess Ereskigal, who support the Pale Queen and want to prevent them from destroying the Pale Queen. Will Mack find the other 12? Will he destroy the queen? Will he survive Princess Ereskigal?

This was such a fun read! It's geared for children but there are some decapitations and exciting violence like that. So, I recommend a parent read it before allowing a young child to. I, personally, LOVED this book and cannot wait to get my hands on the second book in this series!! :) The author kept it very comical as well. It is a quick read and one of those that I didn't want to put down so it made it an even quicker read. I recommend it to everyone!

    Fantastic

Nic (age 8): I like when the story goes back to the old days. I liked the parts about the shark and the princess turning into a monster. Nic's Mom: I had fun reading this with Nic. Lots of dry humor that I enjoyed.
