Overview

Love is something everyone longs for at the deepest level—but for some, love is a curse. This is most certainly true for Asher Lake, the Keeper of an unknown group of people called ani-shifts. Ani-shifts, those with the ability to shift into animal forms, compose a secretive body of individuals known simply as the Union.
A wolf in shifter form, Asher lives with a curse placed upon him and his predecessors by the elusive Raven—a dark entity whose identity remains a mystery. According to the ancient archives, the Raven’s curse is conditional and set in motion by one fatal decision: if a Keeper ever allows himself to fall in love, he will die.
Choosing to live in isolation within the walls of Lake Manor, a private estate concealed by the dense woods of Brokenridge, Asher has vowed never to love or to fall in love with anyone believing it to be the only way to survive. However, after ten years of neglecting his people and the protégés left in his care, along with the impending threats of an uprising, Asher learns the only way to break the Raven’s curse on future Keepers, thereby preventing them from suffering the same fate, is to accept his.
This becomes his strongest challenge of all when he encounters Elle Ison, the woman of his dreams. Does Elle hold the key? Can she help him change his fate?

When it seemed like I was only an F away from flunking out of the sixth grade, a retired school teacher took me under her wing. After some tutoring and testing, she informed my parents that the reason I was having trouble in school wasn’t because I was dumb but instead dyslexic. When my stepfather heard this, he decided to take me to a used bookstore with the belief that the best way to improve my reading skills were to read. Some of the books were hard to get through at first, but with his encouragement I refused to give up. We made many trips to that bookstore, and I especially loved the science fiction and fantasy sections. Then one day, after complaining about the ending of a particular book, he told me that if I didn’t like the books that I had been reading, then to write one myself—so I did. My first attempt resulted in a horribly written western when I was fourteen, staring a cocky gun slinging cowboy by the name Curt Calhoun. Curt along with his seven brothers, who all shared C names in common, may never have seen the pages of a book, but that was the day I stared writing, and never stopped. Shawn Reilly lives in Mt. Comfort Indiana with her husband, and three daughters. Call of the Raven is her debut novel. Since then she has gone on to publish Legend of the Raven. She is currently working on the third novel in the Union series. She writes in various genres, which include paranormal romance/urban legend, science fiction, dystopian, fantasy, suspense, and dramedy.

Call Of The Raven is the first book in the Union Series by Shawn Reilly. This is a story of a secret society of Ani-shifts (shape shifters), known as The Union, led by Keepers, who are born as wolves. Asher Lake is thrown into the role of Keeper and protector of the protégé heirs at a young age due to the death of Grant, the previous Keeper. Throughout history ravens had been considered a bad omen. There is a curse that affects all the Keepers...the Call Of The Raven. Dying young is their destiny.Asher has a plan to guard himself against the ravens call. He vows to never be happy, never to love or fall in love.Asher chooses to live in isolation at a private estate concealed by woods. He neglects his duties as Keeper and his people and protégés for ten years. There are impending threats of an uprising and Asher learns the only way to break the Raven's curse for future Keepers is to accept his fate. When he encounters Elle Ison, the woman of his dreams, he faces his biggest challenge, to never fall in love. Elle is in an abusive relationship. She works at a library where she reads to a group of children. She saves Mary, a dirty little girl from her reading group one day from being abducted. That evening, after another beating from her abusive boyfriend Julio, Elle finds Mary standing in her apartment. Mary is in danger by intruders that have set fire to her apartment. Mary's mother Mea, is an alcoholic and has been gone for some time. She cannot get over the unexplained disappearance of Mary's father, Grant, the love of her life, so she drinks.Mary runs to Elle for protection, they flee and run into the Lakes. They take Elle and Mary in and protect them. The Lakes are a band of animal shifters. Kennedy, the spoiled tiger...Nixon, a handsome young falcon, who suffered from an abusive father...and the brothers, handsome and strong, Ari the Labrador, guardian to his brother Asher, Keeper of the Union, the grey wolf, brave, confused and unwilling to love...until they met Elle. Grant, the previous Keeper, comes from beyond as the grey wolf and gives Asher the strength to learn to love as they begin the fight of their life to save future leaders and the Union. I loved this book!! It's hard to believe that this is a debut novel. It is so well written. Shawn does an amazing job of keeping the reader involved with all the characters and the storyline never gets dull. I can't wait till book two comes out in April.

Reviewed by Michelle Randall for Readers' Favorite In the middle of Indiana, tucked away outside of Indianapolis, sits a manor house where the Lake family lives. It's not your normal family. Grant Lake is the Keeper of the family, and an ani-shifter, a wolf precisely. But Grant has heard the call of the Raven which, according to longstanding family tradition, means his life is about to end and Asher will have to take over.  Asher doesn't want to take over, and he makes a mess of things, almost to the point of destroying the Union, or community of ani-shifters. Call of the Raven (The Union Series) follows Asher as he realizes there is a problem and works to make things right before it's too late. Author Shawn Reilly writes an ani-shifter, giving the reader dogs, wolves, falcons, tigers, just about any animal species, all living and working together. Call of the Raven (The Union Series) is the first book in this new series about the Lake family of Indiana, and the Union of ani-shifters. It is not written like other shifter novels; this really is more about the family dynamics and the traditions and restrictions of living in the Union. Shawn Reilly gives the reader a more involved story, one that keeps you turning pages and wanting to understand exactly what it going on, and guessing about people's pasts. This book would be a good read for young adults, teens and adults. Even though there is some domestic violence and some language, the fact that the lead characters begin the story in their teens makes it a good book for them. Everyone will enjoy this one.

This first book of the Union Series was a very pleasant surprise to me because this is not a genre I usually read, but I cannot wait for Volume Two. I enjoyed the way Ms. Reilly writes and I am impressed this is her debut novel. Bravo Shawn! Elle Ison is a (rather pathetic) lost soul. Brought up by her Grandmother, she never learned her self worth. She became entwined in an abusive, co-dependent relationship, she needed a home and security and he needed a maid and punching bag. That all changed the day she saved a dirty little girl, named Mary, from a man trying to abduct her after Elle's group reading to children at the central library in a southern Indiana community. That evening, after an especially brutal beating because she bought a newly relaeased book about ani-shifts, she finds the dirty girl standing in her apartment. The beatings become increasingly severe so she decides to leave. Mary is, once again, in danger by intruders that set fire to her apartment. Her mother has been gone for some time. She cannot get over the unexplained disappearance of Mary's father, Grant, the love of her life, so she drinks. Mary runs to Elle for protection and they begin a journey of discovery as they come under the protection of a band of animal shifters, the Lake's. They are the spoiled tiger, Kennedy...the handsome young falcon, Nixon, brought to the estate from a horrific abusive father...and the brothers, handsome and strong, Ari the Labrador dog and guardian to his brother Asher, leader of the Union, the grey wolf, brave, confused and unable to love...until they met Elle. Their mentor, Grant, comes from beyond as the grey wolf gives Asher the strength to learn to love as they begin the fight of their life to save future leaders and the Union.
