Jean was barely thirteen when she agreed to work with Mr. Theil to catalogue his family papers. She was trying to be brave and independent, but he was a frightening man. Yet, as she went through his papers, a nightmare unfolded. It was a cruel story from the past...events that long ago shook a peaceful village. And the more Jean learned, the more she knew she was in mortal danger....

In nineteenth-century Massachusetts, orphaned Jean, employed to sort out the family papers of a reclusive artist, becomes curious about the mysterious, long-ago death of his wife and the subsequent disappearance of their young child.

    Amazing Book

I think this book was amazing. I also guessed the ending half way through but i still thought the end was crazy. I think this is the best book ever written by Cynthia Voigt! I could really relate to Jean the 13year old girl in the story. This book is for anyone into mystery and willing to give Cynthia another chance, esspecially after reading Homecoming...

    UGH! ITS SO GOOD!!!

at the very begining i was sorta dazed, but throughout the book it keeps pulling you in more and more. I couldn't put the book down, i was even walking alround reading it, while i was running into people! and when i finished the book i wished it would never end, now im gonna go back and re-read it. plus, my wishes are that it be made into a movie, if only dreams came true

    GREAT BOOK!!!

This book was a really good one. In the beginning I found it a little hard to stick with, but when I finished it, I realized my sticking with it was totally worth it! I really think this book is great, especially for someone who is interested in mysterys with VERY UNEXPECTED endings.

    more from this reviewer

    Thrilling and exciting

Wow! This book was really good, which I must admit, I wasn't really expecting. It pulled me in almost from the very start. At the end, you sort of knew what was going to happen, but there still were twists and turns you didn't see coming. All together, this was a really great book, and I think that people would really enjoy it.
