Wade Mason had been to Hell--and escaped. Shackled in iron manacles, the fleeing inmate traveled to Purgatory to claim his newborn son. He arrived at Callie Quinn's house ready to do battle. But the beautiful angel who guarded his child stripped him defenseless by plopping the crying bundle of joy straight into his unsuspecting arms. They just as surely as she'd released him from his chains, Callie freed his heart. And Wade knew he'd found Heaven in her embrace. When the intimidating outlaw showed up on her doorstep, Callie vowed she would fight tooth and nail to protect the infant entrusted to her. After all, what did a hardened felon know about babies? But one heated kiss told Callie that Wade understood all about tender care. And soon she realized he might be the convict, but she was prisoner to his touch, to his desires ... to his love.

Meet the Author

Bestselling, award-winning author Heidi Betts began her love affair with the romance genre in junior high school, where she used to sneak romance novels into study hall when she should have been doing her homework. It didn’t take long to decide she wanted to write a few romances of her own, so she set out to do just that.

Her first book was released by Dorchester Publishing in 2000, with five more to follow. From there, Heidi moved into the contemporary arena by writing numerous category titles for Silhouette Desire, and recently she signed with St. Martin’s Press to begin writing funny, sexy single titles.

With each new book, Heidi asks herself how she can bring to life endearing heroes and heroines whom readers will believe are meant for each other. A with each new novel to hit the stands, readers and reviewers alike declare she knows how to create a story that sizzles, charms, and delights from the first page to the last. Her first title for Silhouette Desire landed at #1 on the Waldenbooks/Borders Series Romance Bestseller List, where her books have continued to make an appearance ever since.

Heidi loves to read, write, watch movies (and just a little too much television), and surround herself with furry, four-legged friends in her home in the beautiful hills of Central Pennsylvania.

The convict took a step forward, and Callie shrank back automatically. But he only extended one shackled arm far enough to offer the return of her wrap and shift.

"You might want to put these on. It's been a good long while since I've had a woman, and there's no sense pushing the limits of my control."

Callie couldn't have agreed more. Taking the clothing, she half stood and shrugged them over her damp body as quickly as possible, showing as little flesh as she could manage. She stood in the middle of a foot of water, holding the hem of her gown up to keep it from getting wet. The man offered a hand to help her, but despite the chivalry of the gesture, she refused to touch him.

Seemingly unperturbed by her rejection, he retracted the preferred hand and instead stooped to spread the earlier missing towel on the floor beside the tub. The thick iron chains rattled with every move he made.

She had one foot on the towel, the other lifted to step the rest of the way out of the bath, when his next words froze her in place.

"Why don't we make this short and sweet for everyone involved? Just tell me where the boy is, and I'll be on my way."

    Mindless Divel

This book was by far the WORST piece of romantic fiction I have ever come across. The characters were trite and unoriginal, and frankly I did not care for either one of them. A convict (regardless of whether he is innocent or not) that impregnates the town prostitute is not my idea of a 'charming' or romantic hero. He spends 90% of the book wanting to merely conquer Callie's virginity, that I found it hard to believe he was 'in love' with her by the end. Heidi Betts writing style is juvenile at best, and irksome to read. The dialog is populated mainly by circular arguments (i.e. 'he's my baby!' 'no, mine!' 'no, mine!' 'no, mine!', etc.) I also have very little respect for an author that relies on such BLATANT plot conveniences (a gold mine?) to create a 'happy ending'. Please do not waste your time nor money on this frivilous romp though western history. If you want a western romance, invest in Joan Johnston.

The proof is in the reading

If you loved the cover on this one, wait until you read what is inside...One man, Wade, innocent of the charges that imprisoned him. A woman, who had his child and died, saying nothing yet knowing he was innocent. And Callie, the woman who cares for and loves the child. She knows who the father is, but has never met him. Shocked when he enters and catches her in the tub, she doesn't know what to believe. I can and will tell you this: If you think the cover is tempting, the story inside will take you soaring. Callie's love for the child, her struggle to believe in Wade, and the adventure they face while falling in love will carry you even beyond the cover. I loved it!
