Meet the Author

Arthur Newhall had a unique and varied background in the lettering and graphic design fields. His work included type designing, theater lobby displays, movie titles, sign painting, advertising art, lettering for reproduction, and art for screen printing. He also worked as art director for an advertising agency. All of these disciplines added to the refinement of his calligraphy skills. A stickler for precision and style, Newhall was always ready to help and guide the novice as well as the professional. He was one of the innovators of one of the most spectacular letter styles ever created--the Cartoon Casual--as well as a Modern Script of the 40s and 50s.

Eugene Metcalf's career as an artist-designer has been punctuated by national and international awards. Metcalf's natural talent in the various art fields has established him as a top calligrapher and designer. Lettering design became a specialty leading him to the creation of logos with a variety of commercial applications. Of his more than 30 years in the commercial art industry, almost half of them were spent as art director and top designer for major outdoor advertising companies in the Los Angeles area. In the past several years, Metcalf has been a freelance artist in the full spectrum of commercial art, including national magazine covers.

    Excellent beginner kit

I've been doing calligraphy for twenty years. I've worked with several beginner kits as well as built my own for students. This one is excellent for many reasons: the pen, compact nature of the instructions, simplicity of the hands offered. The pen takes the superior ink sold by Rotring and Staedtler, both of which are light fast (I tested them, as they are not marked) and their inks are better than the watery cargridges sold in this kit. However, the ink flow on this pen rivals my old Osmiroids and almost equals my Rotring pens. The pen is the most important piece of this kit, as you don't want to have to replace it as soon as you figure out you enjoy doing calligraphy. Me, I started with Shaeffer and was always frustrated at its terrible ink flow and lack of archival ink availability. The book is OK. It has simple hands and straightforward instructions, though none of the hands are particularly historical. Good place to start. If they sold the pen by itself, I'd have purchased it by the bucket load for students. Just remember to get Staedtler or Rotring ink cartriges for the pen.

Great professional kit for basics - but needs pen info.

Great book and kit, but where do you find the cartridges for the pen? There is no name of they kind of pen on it, so hard to find refills.

    RIP OFF

This is the kit I ordered but instead I received what must have been an older version (the cover wasn't even the same)and the ink cartridges were all dried up, the complete instruction booklet (haha) contains no information on the cheap plastic fountain pen (cleaning, maintenance, loading etc), the practice pad contains TEN 6 1/2 x 9 1/2" sheets, the "guide" has 4 letters on it, and the calligraphy paper consists of TEN 6 1/2 x 9 1/2" sheets, the "project book" only contains 6 pages that shows you how to make the letters (a picture of the letter with arrows and numbers) the particular alphabet being crammed into the 6 1/2 x 9 1/2" space ( 2 of the 6 have the lower cases crammed onto the same page with the capital letters)the rest of the book consists of small paragraphs on definitions. I would NOT recommend it as a "beginner" kit and advance calligraphists would laugh at it.
