Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
Lego's return to its winning formula of boy-centric building kits ensures its popularity for at least another generation, and thankfully there are books to keep the fans reading. The cover of the title is similar to a scene one would spot on the cover of a Lego box—a photographed Lego officer is an arms-length from nabbing a shifty-looking criminal, already decked out in his prison garb. Although a prison break is implied, the story follows the usual sequence: Crooks rob a bank. The police hunt for clues and then give chase in all sorts of awesome vehicles. The bad guys are stopped by a roadblock and thrown in the clink. This simple but exciting tale of good guys versus bad guys one comes to expect from these diminutive characters is perfect for readers to act out later with their own Lego toys. The live-action characters on the cover assume cartoon bodies in the book, and their tiny faces are surprisingly expressive. Beginner readers will be screaming for the entire "City Adventures" series. The Scholastic Level 1 Readers work on "sight words, words to sound out" and help beginner readers work on simple sentences. Even better, each takes pop characters and uses them to motivate new readers to get excited about learning to read. These are recommended for libraries looking to grow their Easy Readers sections.
