Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Hurray! It's summer and that means fun at camp. This camp is different. It's a doggy camp and Roxie is excited about going, but a little worried that the other dogs will find out her secret, which she carries in her Pooch Pouch. Here's a hint: it's soft, snuggly, warm and comforts anyone who's lucky enough to have one. Roxie sneaks her secret out at bedtime, takes a sniff and hides it under her pillow. Sound familiar? Also at camp is a poodle bully named Lucy who seems to always be causing trouble. If Lucy sniffs out Roxie's secret, Roxie might be in trouble. But wait! Roxie discovers that Lucy and some of the other dogs have secrets, too, and all are hiding them in their Pooch Pouches. A lighthearted but meaningful story of summer fun, friendships and secrets. Colorful, humorous illustrations are comforting and assuring to anyone who has ever dealt with a bully or simply wanted to snuggle with a favorite blankie. A good book to read to younger children and with school age children, this book may help calm the worries of first-time campers and is a valuable addition to a personal, classroom or school library. Rodman writes about two common childhood concerns in an open, comforting and reassuring manner. She has received the Ezra Jack Keats award for Outstanding New Picture Book Writer and the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Hayashi has illustrated several picture books and is the recipient of the 2000 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid

K-Gr 2—Roxie, a young pup, goes off to camp for the first time. During the bus ride she worries about what the other dogs might think of her and hides her blankie in her pooch pouch. When she arrives, she is cautious around the new campers and tentative with her bunkmates, troubled that someone will find out about her secret. An annoying poodle named Lacy is mean and bossy to everyone around her. One afternoon, during pup paddle time, she disappears and Roxie and the other campers and their counselor look everywhere for her. They end up back at the Mutt Hut and find Lacy on her bunk with her own blankie. Rather than tease her, Roxie gets out hers and expects the worst to happen. To her surprise, all of the other pups pull out theirs, too. The story line seems a bit contrived, but the soft watercolor, pen, and colored-pencil cartoons enhance the mood and capture the campers' expressions throughout.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Can skittish Roxie keep her big secret from fellow summer campers? Riding the bus with a variety of canine breeds (all in bright yellow T-shirts), long-eared Roxie looks nervous. She's afraid the others will tease her if they find out she's brought her blankie, hidden in her pooch pouch. All are nice and helpful except for Lacy, a tall poodle who tries to intimidate everyone. She steals Roxie's bunk in the Mutt Hutt and, when the two are Splash pals together, manages to overturn their canoe. The next day, her mean pranks continue; she disrupts the craft table, leaves her pooch pouch out for others to trip over and crashes into the Frisbee players. Later, Lacy doesn't show for Pup Paddle Time at the pond; reluctantly, a search party is formed. They find Lacy in the Mutt Hutt, clinging to her blankie. The shocked silence that follows is broken when Roxie bravely confesses her blankie secret. Soon every other pup follows suit—"Best friends rock both night and day / Camp K-9 pups, yip yip hooray!" Roxie's present-tense narration contains all the right details of both activities and feelings. Hayashi's clean pictures, in watercolor, pen and colored pencil, have a gentle look, apt for target audience. This empathetic tale should calm the nerves of all novice campers-to-be.
