Camp Morton 1861-1865: Indianapolis Prison Camp examines the history of Camp Morton, which served as a recruiting camp, a prison for Confederate soldiers, and place of detention for Union soldiers on parole during the Civil War. Although at various times the treatment and condition of the prisoners kept at Camp Morton has been controversial, the authors have attempted to provide an honest picture of the life of the camp. First published by the Indiana Historical Society in 1940 and reprinted in 1995, the book grew out of a talk given by author Joseph R. H. Moore at the Society's History Conference in December 1932 and work on the camp done by author Hattie Lou Winslow at Butler University.
