Overview

Arrian's history of Alexander the Great is our most complete and reliable account of the world's greatest conqueror. Writing in the Roman Empire during the 2nd century AD, Arrian was a Greek historian, philosopher, and military commander. For this work, also known as “The Anabasis of Alexander,” he had access to many sources which are now sadly lost. Thankfully for us, he cites them by name, weighs their truthfulness and motives, and records what he believes to be the most probable story of Alexander's intentions and deeds. The result is a brilliant description of the young Macedonian prince, and of how he conquered most of the known world in just ten years. This ebook edition includes an active table of contents, reflowable text, and extensive footnotes by E. J. Chinnock on the geography, culture, and history of Alexander's world.

Table of Contents:
 • Translator’s Preface
 • Life and Writings of Arrian
 • Arrian’s Preface
 • Book I (from the Death of Philip to Alexander in Phrygia)
 • Book II (from the Capture of Mityline by the Persians to the Capture of Gaza)

arrian's account of alexander is superbe. what amazed me most was the very first pages' discussion of alexander's military activites in the danube. it was sort of the prelude to his legendary encounter with porus in india. in addition to the estensive description of alexander's battles and doings, alexander is portrayed as a lively figure with quotes that actually attests to his rhetorical skill and strong will. generally it is considered the most reliable ancient source on alexander's life. it is much better than plutarch who i think merely wrote a couple of trivial anecdotes. also better curtius whose writing style i completely disliked. also enjoyable is the documentary by michael wood.

With a rating from one to 100... I give it 101! Excellent represantation of a general who lived very close to Alexander's era, had more information available in his hands, and managed to collect all the puzzle pieces successfully creating a terrific masterpiece. Great job, for all Alexander fans, I definitely recommend it.
