Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Ultimately, comparing this to other books is not possible because Campbell's truly stands alone in the market. The best exercise is not to compare it to other books, but rather to compare it to its previous editions. In this regard, it is a significant upgrade to the 10th and 11th, and worthy of purchase. If you are still depending on an older edition, then you really need to get up to date and return to the roots that you were taught in orthopedic training. Campbell's has been a foundation of orthopedic education for many years, and the newest version drives home the fact that it will remain the key reference for the foreseeable future." - Mark R Hutchinson, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine) Doody 5 stars
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: In the field of orthopedics, only two time-tested books are considered perennial go-to references — Rockwood, Green, and Wilkins' Fractures, Bucholz et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2010) for fractures and Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics for everything else. Campbell's is the first reference for most residents in training and orthopedic surgeons, and every orthopedic library in the world depends on it as a cornerstone of its reference section.
Purpose: The real question is not whether Campbell's is great, but whether this edition is worth the investment for upgrading from an older edition. For orthopedic surgeons who don't have it, it is a must buy. Since orthopedic surgical procedures and equipment continue to improve with innovations, and we learn more about evidence-based outcomes, this new edition is valuable and necessary.
Audience: Virtually every orthopedic surgeon in the world has turned to this book during training or practice. It is an essential read for every orthopedic resident and should be in the library of most orthopedic surgeons as a first line reference to begin their review or preparation for most operative cases. It has always had an impressive author/contributor list. Drs. Canale and Beaty once again have done a superior job in creating the leading reference in orthopedic surgery.
Features: Since this book has always been comprehensive, the average orthopedic surgeon likely will ask: what's new and why the 12th edition? My response would be the current updates throughout, the high quality images that prove the point that a picture is worth a thousand words, and the highlighted techniques that provide a step-by-step cookbook for how to perform each procedure. Another wonderful bonus is the access to the online version, which gives users access to videos of key procedures, links to PubMed abstracts for most of the references, and, best of all, access to the full, four-volume text via any computer or mobile device.
Assessment: Ultimately, comparing this to other books is not possible because Campbell's truly stands alone in the market. Campbell's has been a foundation of orthopedic education for many years, and the newest version drives home the fact that it will remain the key reference for the foreseeable future.
