Camper Vantiquities [Bonus Tracks]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Sean Westergaard
Camper Van Beethoven was one of the great, pioneering indie rock bands. When Spinart released the Cigarettes & Carrot Juice box in 2002, legions of Camper fans probably rushed out to pick up remastered versions of great albums that had been out of print for years. Two years later, when Spinart made the individual albums available again, this time augmented by bonus tracks the box set contained just the original albums, as issued, those who bought the box most likely felt like they were being taken advantage of. After all, it was the dedicated fans who rushed out to buy the box, the same fans who would most desire bonus tracks. Camper Vantiquities originally ...

Camper Vantiquities originally gathered assorted outtakes from the band's second and third albums, the Vampire Can Mating Oven EP, BBC sessions, and a handful of other odds and ends into a thoroughly enjoyable post-Camper celebration. The 2004 edition adds five bonus tracks, three of them demos from what would become their final album, Key Lime Pie, and one from the other Virgin album, Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart. To be honest, they don't differ drastically from the released versions, but it's cool to hear Jonathan Segel's playing on the Key Lime Pie tracks, as he was out of the band by the time that was recorded. Additionally, the songs are given humorous faux histories, in the spirit of the original Vampire Can Mating Oven liner notes collectors will be glad they kept their originals: the original VCMO liners are not reproduced here. While this expanded edition probably offers the least interesting bonus material of the 2004 reissues, fans of the band will be pleased to have a bit more music from one of the great bands of the '80s.
