Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Hummel and Marilyn Courtot
Mr. and Mrs. Green love sharing experiences with each other, and the color green. After all, they are alligators. The original collection included three lively stories, where they go camping, devour 100 pancakes, and enter the County Fair. To create this early reader, however, only one of the tales had been selected. On the camping trip they have different ideas about just what to pack. Mrs. Green makes an organized list and wants to pack practical things, but Mr. Green wants chocolate bars, marshmallows, soda pop, fluffy pillows, and his bunny slippers. Mrs. Green provides a map and off they went on their camping trip. They passed through their own garden, a favorite picnic area, across the Polliwog Bridge and finally arrived at a squeaky back gate that looked very familiar. The ending is cute with the couple camping out in their own backyard right next to the birdbath. Colorful and amusing acrylic paintings (with lots of green) show the zany couple in cartoon-like form. Look carefully at the many details and the engaging ?gator expressions. This text is a Level 2 book in the "Green Light Readers" series and has been designated Guided Reading J, Reading Recover 17 and targeted for grade 2. Reviewer: Laura Hummel and Marilyn Courtot

Kirkus Reviews
A practical alligator and her more excitable husband plan a camping trip in this slightly reformatted chapter taken from Meet Mr. and Mrs. Green (2002). "We need food and water," proposes Mrs. Green. "Like chocolate bars and marshmallows," responds Mr. Green. "And soda pop!" Though Mr. Green's enthusiasm flags when Mrs. Green mentions a map--"There could be dark, mysterious woods, strange, eerie sounds, spooky, glowing eyes, sharp, pointy teeth, and mosquitoes!"--he brightens again when the trek ends in their own backyard. Distinguished by a string of pearls (for her, unsurprisingly) and a necktie (for him, ditto), the otherwise identical bright green couple poses amid a clutter of comfy domestic details in Baker's small but open-edged cartoon illustrations. Neither here nor in the likewise republished Cookies (from On the Go with Mr. and Mrs. Green, 2006) have either the art or the page design been significantly altered, but as single episodes, the stories may be less intimidating to newly independent readers than the original collections. Engaging, sitcom-style humor based on personality differences and securely attuned to the intended audience. (Early reader. 4-6)
