Overview

Who can forget their first camping trip?

"Holidays, lolling days. Mom wishes for museums and art galleries. Dad talks about fancy hotels. My sister Laurie wants malls, anywhere. Duncan dreams of arcades.

And I long for Disneyland."

This year won_t be like the others. There will be no paintings or fluffy towels, clothes racks, jackpots or mouse ears. Nancy and her family are going camping. Just the thought of camping is bad enough. Outhouses, mosquito bites, burnt food and lots of work_what kind of holiday is that?

But from the moment their campsite is established, the family slowly begins to discover the magic of life in the wild. Nights so quiet and dark, it's like being wrapped in a blanket. Food that warms the stomach and awakens the senses. Swimming in the lake, climbing trees and lolling in the sun. And millions, no, bajillions of stars.

More time, less o_clock. That's what camping is about.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Mulcahy
This book is a treat. Pleasing to the senses, it is delightful in every way. The acrylic artwork is masterful and refreshing, and the writing is poetic. Written in free-verse, the language is descriptive, creating a soft and gentle mood. The writer's use of word tropes and figurative language such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, and metaphor brings depth and life to the text. Through his use of color, the illustrator conveys the beauty and warmth of nature, which complements the writing style and the mood. The story tells of a family that, because they cannot afford museums, art galleries, fancy hotels, or Disneyland, goes on a camping holiday instead. The child telling the story is, at first, unimpressed by such plans. This changes, however, as the joys of camping slowly emerge. The family is seen roasting marshmallows, swimming in the lake, gathering wood, pumping water, singing campfire songs, gazing at stars, and hiking for ice-cream. A wonderful addition to a classroom library, this book can be used to teach poetry and the use of figurative language. It would also be great for independent reading or for a read-aloud.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-A family who can't afford fancy hotels, museums, malls, or arcades on summer vacation decides to try camping. The young narrator would prefer to go to Disneyland, but after one night of chicken stew and burned marshmallows, she changes her mind and, gradually, living in a tent becomes its own wonderland. While the author seeks to inspire a love of this kind of experience, the text doesn't work. It meanders from story to two- or three-word descriptions: "Tent up. Cloth spread, poles tensed, home raised. My sleeping bag, pillow, teddy. A playhouse for day, a flimsy fortress at night. Yawning space beyond." The sentences are at times poetic, but more often seem short, choppy, and in need of verbs. And the voice and word choices are definitely adult. Deines's illustrations, however, are quite beautiful, playing with color and light in an almost impressionistic manner. For a lovely book about the wonder and beauty of nature, try Gary Paulsen's Canoe Days (Doubleday, 1999). More inspiring camping titles include Vera B. Williams's Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe (Greenwillow, 1981) and Allen Say's The Lost Lake (Houghton, 1989).-Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL

Meet the Author

Nancy Hundal_s prose seems to dance off the pages in this valentine to camping. As with her previous bestsellers, Number 21 and Prairie Summer, Camping is filled with unique expressions and descriptive language so beautifully precise, it brings with it an almost electric shock of recognition.

This is artist Brian Deines third collaboration with the author, following Prairie Summer and Number 21. And once again, his palette is filled with the warmth of sunny days and firelight and the sharp cold of water and star-filled nights. And his impressionistic brush strokes heighten the sense of being surrounded by and part of his gorgeous images.
