Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Poor quiet Jack. His whole family is "VERY NOISY." No one seems to hear what he says. Each person he tells that he is going "to the very top of the mountain today" simply answers as if he said something else. He just hopes somebody heard him as he sets out with his stuffed animal friend Chester "up, up, up the mountainside…" When he reaches the top, he shouts, "Can anybody hear me?" His voice seems to disappear. He and Chester play, then find a lost wolf cub. Together they howl until the wolf mother arrives. When they encounter a bear, Chester encourages Jack to growl until the bear flees. When night falls, however, Jack fears they are lost. He manages to call loud enough for his searching parents to find him. Back home, he demands quiet so they all will finally listen to "every word" of his story. The jolly barnyard animals on the end pages set a lighthearted tone to the visual story, one encouraging to youngsters who feel that no one is ever listening. Digitally produced scenes depict Jack in mundane activities at first. Then some double pages describe the hilly landscape and cloudy mountaintop. Jack is an appealing kid in a ten-gallon hat ; little Chester makes a believable companion. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Kirkus Reviews
In Jack's boisterous family, ranch life is one noisy stampede with the boy trampled in the shuffle. Jack shares his plans to visit the local mountain with each relative, but his words fall on deaf ears. Even siblings June-bug and Jim-bob misinterpret his announcement and start a rousing game of hide-and-seek instead. Frustrated, Jack travels to the mountain with Chester, his inanimate canine cohort. Once they're alone, Meserve's digitally rendered illustrations depict the stuffed pooch reciprocating the conversation; in a delightful touch to his wrangler wardrobe, Jack's oversized cowboy hat falls down his face in wonderment. He learns to express himself clearly and connects with the wild animals he encounters. As night approaches, lost Jack's successful call reunites his family; his mighty "QUIET, PLEASE!" demands attention as he recalls the eventful day. Varied colors enliven the tale, conveying the shifts in mood as the vast purple skies transform into the warm orange glow of hearth and home. Shout yee-haw for cowboy Jack, who finally finds his voice. (Picture book. 4-7)
From the Publisher

"Quiet Jack, who lives on a farm, is overwhelmed by his big, noisy family--they don't seem to hear him at all.  When he says he's going to climb the mountain, each of them hears something different.  Ma makes him two pancakes, Granny starts to knit a red sweater, Pa hopes he can catch some big fish, and so on.  At the top of a snow-covered peak, his yell, "Can anybody hear me?" is swallowed by the sky.  Jack wishes for someone to answer him and is surprised when his stuffed bear replies, "I've always heard you."  As the pair head home, they help a lost wolf cub, Jack scares off a bear with a loud growl, and they lose their way.  Finally, his family hears him when he calls for help.  After dinner, he uses his newly found big voice to shush everyone and tell of his day's adventures.  The text is placed in and around the illustrations to good effect.  Large bold type is used to represent the loud voices of Jack's family and, in the end, Jack's voice as well.  The pictures aptly depict the idyllic countryside and the down-home charm of Jack's family and livestock.  Despite the happy ending, some children may find Jack's invisibility a big unnerving, but it may resonate with others."--School Library Journal
