Overview

How do fish breathe? Can bulls really see red? Did unicorns really exist? Why do wolves howl at the moon? Can you get to China by digging a hole? Here in paperback are four outstanding books that will whet the appetite of any child who is curious about the world and how it works. Dr. Myers answers questions in a warm, informative manner that helps young readers understand the complexity of science. Boys and girls discover that science needn't be dull and dry—it can be fun and exciting. What makes these books even more special is that they feature questions and answers that have been collected from a quarter century of Highlights for Children. These are real questions from real kids.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- A compendium of common questions children ask about animals. Topics cover a broad range of behavior of fish, birds, amphibians, mammals, and insects, but inquiries are not answered with a sense of authority. When asked why fish from a pet store often die, Myers meanders through possible reasons and concludes, ``Ask someone who already has fish and knows about how to keep them.'' To ``Why do cats purr?'' he replies, ``I don't know the answer to that question. If you find an answer, please let me know.'' The book is peppered with similar responses and many statements that begin with ``I guess'' or ``I think.'' This chatty style smoothly blends the information, but diminishes the credibility of the many specific facts that are backed up by scientific evidence. Full-color illustrations by numerous artists range from realistic depictions to silly cartoons. An index limited to specific animal names is included. Lingering questions and inconclusive answers remain after the book is closed. ``The Kids' Question & Answer Books'' (Putnam) by the editors of Owl Magazine provide more information in a similar format. --Diane Nunn, Richard E.
