PreS-Gr 1Once again, Janovitz has come up with a winning rhymed book that incorporates the humor, wit, and gentle interaction between the father/son duo introduced in Is It Time? (North-South, 1994). Cub is eager to help Wolf in the garden. The well-thought-out, evenly flowing rhyme, "Pull the weeds, plant the seeds/Do the mowing, help with hoeing," lends itself to cheery chanting with each repetitive, growing verse on alternate pages, making the concept of working together really fun. Soft watercolors predominately in pale hues of blue and gray enliven the amusing mishaps as the two "gardeners" progress with their chores and end the hard work with a loving hug and well-deserved nap. A light and bouncy story that's a pleasure to read aloud over and over again.Rita Soltan, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI

The loving father and son who appeared in "Is It Time? (1994) return in this rhyming picture book. The little wolf is anxious to help his dad with chores in the yard, such as mowing, hoeing, pulling weeds, and planting seeds, but his well-intentioned actions are not always successful. The book shows both a gentle humor (some of it carried out in the illustrations) and a loving tone: "Can I help you squirt the hose?" the little wolf asks. But after that goes awry, the next question is, "Can I help you dry your nose?" Actions in the book are repeated at intervals in cumulative refrain. Simple drawings, washed with delicate watercolors, contribute to the book's beguiling charm.
