Can You Hear It

All Music Guide - Zac Johnson
Listening to K.C. Groves' CD Can You Hear It is like whisking back to a time when life was simpler, but by no means any less heartbreaking. This Michigan singer/songwriter evokes an authentic and moving old-timey feel with her rich but uncluttered arrangements of guitar, mandolin, dobro, banjo, and even bouzouki and accordion. The album features folk talents like Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brien, and Laurie Lewis, while in the forefront throughout is the charming vocal talent of Groves herself, an intriguing mix of personalities between newgrass pioneer Alison Krauss and high-lonesome indie darling Gillian Welch. This is a flowing, sometimes achingly honest, and always very professional album that maintains a unique Midwestern sound. Groves' songs range from expressions of summertime sweetness "Peach Pie" to smirking desire the Ani DiFranco-at-the-Grand-Ole-Opry "Bad Boy Blues". On Can You Hear It, K.C. Groves pulls off an interesting feat: her songs are traditional but more like visiting a restored Victorian house than walking through a museum. The structure is reminiscent of times long past, but contemporary touches have been added that feel right at home.
