Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Texas modern worship sextet Dave Crowder Band, led by its charismatic founder/lead vocalist/namesake, brings a rollicking rock sentiment to the praise & worship genre. Crowder and bandmates are already a fixture with the college crowd, thanks to their music ministry at Waco's University Baptist Church, where the 1,000-plus-member congregation consists almost entirely of young people. Crowder clearly knows how to connect with his generation, and the 11-track Can You Hear Us? mixes passionate worship lyrics with powerful performances; the end result is a Shawn Mullins-meets-Rich Mullins sound. Crowder is actually reminiscent of breakout Christian artist Shaun Groves, ...

Crowder is actually reminiscent of breakout Christian artist Shaun Groves, but that should come as no surprise: Crowder, like Groves, is a product of the music program at Waco's Baylor University. Both artists put some rough edges on their brand of acoustic rock, as is clear on Crowder's hit "Our Love Is Loud." The softer "God of Wrath" is still hauntingly powerful, while "My Hope" shows Crowder's sunnier side with its light, acoustic guitar strings. While the original compositions are solid, Crowder boldly covers both Sinéad O'Connor "Thank You" and delirious? "Obsession". Can You Hear Us? is refreshingly deep, steering clear of the banality that has plagued so much of today's praise & worship music, perhaps reminding us that the future of modern worship lies with today's young players.
All Music Guide - Ashleigh Kittle
In March 2002, sixsteprecords released Can You Hear Us?, the debut project from the David Crowder Band. Composed of lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist David Crowder, electric guitarists Jack Parker and Jason Solley, drummer Jeremy Bush, bass guitarist Mike Dodson, and electric violinist Mike Hogan, the group artistically blends modern worship with edgy pop
ock sounds. The result is a type of style that might arise from a melting pot consisting of Delirious? and Matt Redman tracks. According to Crowder, the album "has a couple of themes...first, there is the fact that often we all feel disconnected from God. Second, there is a breakthrough realization of the truth: that we are living in the absolutely constant very presence of God. And when we realize that, we can't help but find rescue" Sparrow Records. Songs include "You're Everything," a track opening with a very purposeful acoustic guitar melody which builds until dropping off at the bridge, only to be later joined by violins and a drum loop resembling the clapping of hands. Also featured is the intense and thought-provoking, yet at the same time lyrically tender "God of Wrath" and the band's stirring interpretation of Martin Smith's "Obsession."
