Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A host of cuddly animals are making sounds in this simply "moo-tiful" picture book from David Wojtowycz. Vivid colors and soft illustrations show a smiling snail visiting lots of animal friends, including a "cheery little chick" that goes "cheep cheep cheep," a "cuddly little kitten" making a "meow meow" sound, and two "furry little bears" calling "grrr grrr." Of course, the best part comes on the final spread, where "it's time for you to say...'Hello, little animals! Have a good day!' " as all of the characters team up and make the happiest sounds together! With a fun theme and refreshing look -- especially the cute cow-pattern endpapers -- this animal sounds book will keep toddlers crowing with amusement.
Publishers Weekly
New titles arrive to tickle toddlers' fancies. David Wojtowycz's charming artwork enlivens two paper-over-board books: Can You Moo? and Can You Choo Choo? In the first title, a simple text presents a number of animals and the noises that they make, from the "cheep cheep cheep" of a "cheery little chick" to the "woof woof woof" of "playful little puppies." In the second, modes of transportation in a variety of colors speed along with their accompanying sounds, including the "roar roar roar" of the "silver rocket ship blasting off into space" and the "beep beep beep" of the "shiny yellow school bus." Both volumes recap the soundmakers and their noises on a final spread. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

What a happy way to start your pre-schoolers day. The bright colors, simple text and friendly animals, wild and tame, invite youngsters to imitate the language of the animal on each double-page spread. From a cheery little chick to a happy little lion to a smiley little calf, children become familiar with the names of some baby animals. The bear cubs are bears, but not cubs, and we are introduced to the vocalizations of each. What a cacophony it will be when a whole class repeats the noises on the last page! Bright, attractively hued backgrounds enhance each animal, making another concept lesson on colors when using this book. For instance you could ask—what sound does the animal on the blue page make?—and this could be a starting point or reflection for repeat performances. One thing that baffles me is why there is a snail on every page, but no mention of its sound or description. Perhaps you can explain that. 2003 (2001 text), Orchard Books/Scholastic Inc,

PreS-These appealing books feature simple language; eye-catching artwork; thick, durable pages; and brightly colored backgrounds. Choo Choo presents a variety of vehicles, complete with square eyes and smiling mouths, and the noises they make. Moo introduces a cast of enthusiastic animals along with their sounds. Each spread offers a brief line of text. Drawn with soft edges, the oversized objects depicted in the childlike illustrations dominate the clean and uncluttered pages. The miscellaneous sounds appear next to the pictures in dark bold type. Pair these titles with Pat Thomson's The Squeaky, Creaky Bed (Doubleday, 2003) and Bernard Most's The Cow That Went Oink (1990) and Cock-a-Doodle-Moo (1996, both Harcourt) for an enjoyable toddler storytime.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
