A wide-eyed cast of barnyard animals and a series of flaps help introduce the sounds that five animals make. Light humor has a tangible presence in Braun’s digital images as cats, rabbits, sheep, and other animals stare expectantly at the flaps, as if anxiously waiting for readers to lift them. Questions drive the guessing-game aspect of the book: “Who’s that in the barn?” reads the opening scene; the brown hoof, black-and-white spotted flank, and tiniest hint of a pink udder let readers hazard a guess before they lift the flap and find out for certain. Available simultaneously: Can You Say It, Too? Woof! Woof! Up to age 3. Illustrator’s agent: The Bright Agency. (Feb.)

Children's Literature - Jillian Kobelin
This darling lift-the-flap board book features a cast of friendly farm animals. Little ones can work on fine motor skills by lifting each flap to discover animals in different farm settings. The friendly cow is hiding in the barn, the noisy rooster behind the bucket, the hungry horse beside the trees, and the wooly sheep next to the hay. They can practice naming animals, as well as sounding out fun animal noises. The illustrations are bright and colorful, featuring the farm setting of trees, fields, flowers, barns, and plenty of additional farm animals. Each featured animal is barely visible behind its flap, with just an ear peeking out or a tail swinging. Readers will come across a fun surprise at the end, as the pig inside the barn stall has an extra flap to open that reveals her little piglets! This board book is recommended as an age-appropriate, educational, and enjoyable story for little readers. Reviewer: Jillian Kobelin; Ages 0 to 4.

In this refreshingly simple lift-the-flap offering, friendly animals play hide-and-seek all around the farm."Who's that in the barn?" Eager little hands will lift the large barn-shaped flap to reveal "a friendly cow! Moo! Moo!" On the following pages, they'll find a "noisy rooster" behind a bucket, a "hungry horse" behind some trees and a "woolly sheep" next to the hay. On the final spread, a "happy pig" hides inside a stall. For an extra surprise, the pig itself is a second flap concealing five adorable piglets. Parts of each animal appear behind the flaps—the back end of a cow, one horse's hoof and a sheep's ear, for example—providing little hints that will inspire kids to guess which creature is hiding there. The hidden animals all look cheerful and friendly, and the illustrations are a series of simple, idyllic farm scenes with lots of additional animals for kids to spot and identify, including birds, a ladybug, an owl, a spider, some mice and more. Publishing simultaneously, Woof! Woof! takes readers on a similar tour of a welcoming backyard well-stocked with pets. The very simple text, easy-to-manage lift-the-flap fun, and the focus on farm animals and their sounds make this chunky offering a solid choice for babies and toddlers.
