Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
Who is that behind the gate? In this book, children lift the flap to find some of their favorite animals hiding and learn what noises those animals make. After encountering a dog, a cat, a rabbit and a fish, children will be surprised by the double reveal of first a bird and then her nest of chicks on the final page. In addition to well-known animal noises like “woof” and “meow,” children will learn how even quiet animals make noise, like the crunching sound a rabbit makes when eating a carrot or the glugging sound of an underwater fish. The illustrations are cute, colorful, and engaging. Additionally, children can guess which animal is hiding, not just from memory, but from the visual clues of just an ear or a tail peeking out from behind the flap. The cardboard flaps are also surprisingly durable and will stand up to eager children forcefully lifting them or shutting the book before they are returned to their closed positions. This interactive board book will be a big hit with babies and toddlers ages 3 mo. to 3. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene; Ages 3 mo. to 3.
