Danziger is right on target with this piece of realistic fiction dealing with the problems of today's teenagers trying to be accepted by their peers. She also takes a look at how teenagers relate to their parents. Gr 5-9-In this novel by Paula Danziger (Delacorte, 1979), 14-year-old Lauren Allen is a smart and thoughtful ninth grader. Her family consists of a very strict father, an often frustrated mother, a college aged older sister and a would be comedienne younger sister. Lauren's boyfriend, Bobby, has just dumped her for Sandy, "who goes further." As Lauren is about to start a new class, "Law for Children and Young People," she vows to give up boys and concentrate on a career in law. Life gets complicated quickly when she meets eighth grader, Zack, in her law class, her father disowns her sister for moving in with her boyfriend, her mother decides to start substituting at her school, and her father hits the roof over her newly pierced ears. This all makes her wonder if she can sue her parents for malpractice. The author reads with the right amount of emotion to reveal the personality of each of her characters. Teenage angst is portrayed with empathy and wit by Danziger's use of a deliberate pace coupled with her strong New York accent. The story holds up under the test of time, and only appears dated by the way that the father exerts supreme control over the entire family. Meet the Author

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in New York, Paula Danziger knew since second grade that she wanted to be a writer. Beginning her career as a teacher, Danziger taught at the junior high, high school, college levels. She received her Masters Degree in reading and during that time she wrote her first bestselling novel, The Cat Ate My Gymsuit. She returned to teaching, but the success of her book encouraged her to become a full-time writer. It was non-stop for Danziger since then. Among her titles are: the enormously popular Amber Brown books as well as Remember Me To Harold Square, The Divorce Express, and Can You Sue Your Parents For Malpractice?

Danziger received numerous honors, including: Parent's Choice Awards, International Reading Association - Children's Book Council Awards, a IRA-CBC Children's Choice Award and many nominations for state reading and library association awards.

    Nice book

    I really liked this book. I felt like I could really relate to it. I only wish we learned if you could sue your parents for malpractice... the title is a little bit misleading. I really like the book and thats all I can say.

    True Friends

    Everyone who has a younger sibling knows that they are very hard to deal with. Especially if your younger sister wants to be a stand-up comic! Lauren Allen feels the same way. Her sister wants to be a comedian, her mom dreams of being on any game show and winning all the money. Her dad works all the time, and is always in bad moods when he comes home, and her older sister is at college. Lauren feels like she has no one to talk to except for her best friend Bonnie. This story takes place in a small town in 1979. It's about a girl named Lauren. She is going through some really rough times and has to learn how to cope with them.(theme) Her bestfriend Bonnie is always trying to fix her up with guys, but Lauren is just not ready to start dating again.(After her last break up.) She had a really hard time dealing with that. She meets this guy named Zach. He looks great! Nice cheekbones and everything a great looking guy would have! Lauren seems intrested in him, but then she finds out that he is in the eigth grade and she is in the ninth. Thats a big deal in her school. He ends up to be in her Law class and they sit next to each other. Sparks fly, and Lauren has no idea what to do. Very interesting thins start to happen. But you will have to read the book to find out! This book is great! I rate it with five stars because it keeps you intertained, its funny and full of suprises! You should read this book soon!

    These Adolescence books are my fave!!

    I really like this book because you learn something new.And I get so interested I just wanna get all of those kinda books.Paula Danziger sure make the best books ever!!!
