Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
What does it take to survive in the harsh and unforgiving climate of Antarctica? Even though covered with ice, Antarctica by definition is considered a desert. Yet, adventurous travelers journey to the continent on cruise ships and scientists continue to live at research stations. This book, part of the "You Choose Books" series, lets the reader explore three different story paths while interacting with fifty-three possible choices and twenty different endings. Readers can decide to join a team of explorers in the year 1911, lead a group of women on a historic trip to the South Pole or join a modern day research team. The focus on Antarctica brings perspective about its life through rich, information-based written language. Each choice results in a life or death dilemma leading the reader to safety or to doom. This nonfiction adventure is well researched and creates opportunities for school-age readers to develop informational processing skills. The story-like style of the book entices the reader to want to read more. History, geography, science and survival skills are combined with the element of danger and discussed in every path. The book presents an opportunity to tap into high-student-interest while introducing readers to subject-specific vocabulary. In addition to a Table of Contents, readers are supported by a Real Survivors section (adventurers who have traveled to Antarctica and returned to tell their stories), Survival Quiz, Read More Resource List, Glossary, Bibliography, Index and FactHound which provides access to topic related Internet sites. Since the information can vary in reading levels and navigation skills, adult monitoring may be necessary for students to fully and safely explore sites. Other topics in the series include surviving the jungle, storm chasing and the Titanic. A very worthwhile read for personal or classroom use and an excellent resource for information gathering.
